Ammo Boxes
Does anyone know of a cheap place to get army surplus ammo boxes? I can't seem to find any cheap ones. I'm interested in using them for storage of supplies and potentially geocaching (although I hear this isn't advisable).

Re: Ammo Boxes
You really need to go to a army surplus store. Still the four I use charge £20 for big, £15 for medium size ones and £10 for small (baton rounds/ .50 cal size)

Hi , I don't know where you live but as Metraton has suggested Surplus Army stores , if you contacted Kevin at endicotts he could sort you out something from here:-

Iff its just fro Geo-caching ( and I don't know much about geo caching ) then could you not just use sealed plastic pipe?? Go down to the local builders or plumbers merchants and get some white PVC waste water pipe , some blank cap ends , some screwable tops and some plumbers solvent.
You can then make the containers in any length you require.
I've made a few up for fishing gear and stuff and they work a treat.

## found this hope it explains a little better , this is obviously using 4" soil pipe , which can be done here , but the end caps can be quite pricey!##

Re: Ammo Boxes
why not just use a water proof food container, available in various sizes and very cheap in every major Super Market?

Re: Ammo Boxes
The food containers won't be strong enough for a cache. They would bend and eventually break or leak in under the weight of dirt - try bending a pipe and a food container's lid just to compare.

Re: Ammo Boxes
I disagree.
Iv had a simple old tub of whey protien under ground for about 7 years now, i used it about a dozen times a year. Its been 100% fine not one crack.
Once I damaged the lid cos it was on too tight but i just replaced it with another lid leaving the same tub under ground.
its about half a foot down, complete submerge.
Once its ready to be covered and resubmerged a place a little square of plastic (cut from a rubble sack) of the top and tighten it round, just for extra protection from rain but i think even thats overkill.

I may have got the wrong end of the stick on this one but why would you store whey protein underground for 7 years?tfish wrote: Iv had a simple old tub of whey protien under ground for about 7 years now, i used it about a dozen times a year.

I suspect he means an old whey protein tub, rather than a tub still full of whey protein.

Re: Ammo Boxes
A suplement tub would probably be fine as you have posted tfish but what I had in mind was those plastic sandwich boxes - a couple misunderstandings in the topic me thinks

Re: Ammo Boxes
Same outcome. Plastic Sandwich boxs are properly more sturdy than a whey tub.
I use basic types of sandwhich boxs and then wrap them in this thick plastic tape my dad has a box of, i dont know what its called but its very shiney and stretchs almost... making the box totally waterproof.
These will then keep for decades underground if placed right.
My faithfull whey tub isnt wrapped in anything like this cos i use it every few weeks but a long term stash just go for a sarnybox... if you cant find some badass tape i guess wrap it in a cut to size rubble bag and duct tape it.... duct tape will rot after a year or so id guess tho
