Jerry Cans on Ebay

Post by centralscot »

I just noticed on Ebay that some people are advertising Jerry cans in small batches of up to 5 or 10. Apparently they are unused Army Surplus but a bit rusty on the outside. Clearly this a pretty good way to store fuel etc. Anyone thinking of storing petol should look into the limited storage life petrol has, (some threads here deal with topic already) although I believe these sealed metal cans reduce some of those problems. As far as I know there are no such problems with diesel.

I will probably buy a few for Keroscene, a few for some diesel for my generator etc and perhaps also at least a can for petrol.

Diesel and Paraffin keep many years, but you have to be careful with air gaps at the top of the can which can put water into your fuel. Petrol for a longer term will need treatment every year to get it to keep excessively long periods, or rotated every month or if treated replaced each year.

I got 5 cans from one of the Surplus stores a few years back, I think they had excess as I got the lot for £20 delivered, still going strong, but two of the cans were what I call "Lorry" cans as the outlet was a lot bigger than the standard so the pouring nozzle doesn't fit those two

Our local Recycling Centre has a shop where they sell anything dumped that has a bit of value and they always have a few jerry cans in. I picked up a couple from them for a fiver each.

Fuel should be rotated, as its something most people use a lot of, its a very easy thing to do.

I managed to get some also for a fiver each and will be rotating round on diesel for the car and when I get round to it, a diesel genny.
