Hello All - Happy to join the forum. Found it over Christmas - it appears we share many of the same concerns. Here is my contribution.
Morrisons currently have a 3 for £5 sale on Grolsh lager in those resealable swingtop bottles (the ones with the old fashioned rubber/ceramic/wire stopper). This works out to £2.70 per litre as opposed to the normal £4.50/litre (or so).
The reason I post this is that if you were planning on brewing beer to learn the skill, to lay in a supply for personal consumption or for trade you could reasonably get some nice beer for a new years event and at the same time get some excellent resealable re-usable home brew bottles at no extra cost.
That price is still more expensive than the bottom end (Carling in tins is £1.80 per litre) but is similar to the mid market brands. Empty bottles of a similar type from a canning supply store will run you about £2.00 each.

Welcome to the forum TwoDo. Please pop over to the new members section and post an introduction about yourself.
I'm sure some of the members here will be glad of the heads up over the offer on beer.

Hi Twodo, and welcome. A cheap way to buy your bottles and you get free berr in the process so happy days.
Why not brew cider? Everyone likes cider and you can drink it out of brown paper bags. I also believe it counts as one of your five a day so 5 bottles of cider a day and you are well on the way to a healthy lifestyle.

Funny you should mention that. I have just purchased the book: "Real Cider Making on a Small Scale by Michael J. Pooley and John Lomax" and intend to do just that. I am also looking at making or purchasing a cider press and also some sort of pulper is needed apparently.Bladerunner wrote:Why not brew cider? I have also been adding to my collection of Grolsh beer bottles since christmas.

And I am sure you have been buying the bottles and pouring away the current contents so you can put your own in.
I got some apples off Freegle a few months back. We made apple crumble but it could be a good source for you for next years harvest. Doesn't hurt if they are free and they always taste nicer when they don't cost anything.

Actually, yes, in a sense. My children are in their early 20's. As you might imagine, they and their friends have no trouble producing vast quantities of empty beer bottles - all I need to do is provide a supply of full ones. Of course, that wasn't actually my plan but, hey ho, their mum bribes them with free beer (and clothes washing services) to get them to come home from uni every now and then so it might as well be the Grolsh stuff.Bladerunner wrote:And I am sure you have been buying the bottles and pouring away the current contents so you can put your own in.
They are going to be doing the cider making come the autumn.
