I used a bucket when I was a student!

If you wanted to be prepared, probably best to get the old kit your grandma had: washboard, scrubbing brush, mangle, flat iron etc....

A washing machine which ran off the solar array and wind turbine I'll have in the back garden

Or a bucket with a lid, with a hole in the lid, and a plunger with 3 holes cut into it and put on a broom stick. Thread the broom stick through the hole in the lid, fill the bucket with water, soap, clothes, put lid on bucket and use the plunger as an agitator. Now all you need is a mangle. :)

And your point being? Sorry, I don't get what you are implying.

If I had to live off grid, with no washing machine, I am pretty sure it will be back breaking washing clothes by hand. And that goes without saying whether I choose to live off grid, or the power goes out long term for another reason.
