I always find the American apocolyptic books to be very gun heavy but an enjoyable read.
Last Light and After Light by Alex Scarrow, British, peak oil scenario. Good, I enjoyed it, OH found it too depressing.
I have just bought the ebook of The Last Pilgrims by Michael Bunker. Based in the future, a community living and working as if in the past. Haven't started it yet but looks interesting.

i had the misfortune of reading how to survive the end of the world as we know it but james wesley rawles.
i think you would need to be a lottery winner to live the life he recommends with the theories of several different houses, four vehicles all running on different fuel sources and the 191 guns you need.

I liked OSA and it was what convinced dh that prepping was a good idea. Not so much because we're terribly worried about EMPs, but it was a good illustration of how so many things are reliant on our current systems.

Read One Second after, thought it was a very good read. Not just in terms of preppering but also as a good engaging story.

Re: one second after
Finally got around to getting a copy a few weeks ago,
Well worth reading, without giving too much away though, very, very bleak.....
Which in a way I found a refreshing break from the standard model of apocalyptic fiction where 'the group' just bungle along with things just falling into their lap.

I read OSA when it came out on recommendation from a colleague in the States who knows the author - at the time I was writing an article on solar flares and EMP effects I thought this would be a handy read...and I certainly enjoyed the content, and the storyline - demonstrates the atypical events that would happen post event such as this.
If you go to my section on 'How to survive a Jericho-type event' on my preparedness website you can read chapter 5 ...Chapter 5 - High Power Microwave HPM - or, Get out of the Kitchen!
Direct link here http://www.ambilacuk.com/jericho/5emp.html
My intro...
You awake one morning and discover your digital radio alarm clock is blank, not even flashing the display of '12:00' which normally occurs when there has been a temporary power outage. You reach for your non digital watch and discover you have overslept by 45 minutes - cursing you try the other radios and TV in the house and find... nadder! you try the house lights, again nadder -You check your mobile phone, no signal, so you try and ring a family member from the house landline to see what has happened..again..silence on the line!
You go outside and notice a few neighbours across the street attempting to start their cars, with no success, you also notice there are a few vehicles lying abandoned in the middle of the road. You try to start your vehicle - absolutely dead as a dodo! Suddenly, in the distance you hear a vehicle, not the sound of your 'normal' modern day engine relying on all those complex computerised chips, but the typical engine noise of a carburettor and plug system. It is old Joe who runs a VW workshop in town, trundling down the road in his pride and joy a 1969 VW transporter.
You scratch your head and go inside to make that morning cup of coffe and curse when you realise again there is no power.
You now realise someting very serious and odd has occurred!
This would be the initial effect of an Electro Magnetic pulse (EMP) EVENT.
The event can be caused by natural means, such as a major solar storm, or man-made by the reaction of a nuclear explosion high up in the atmosphere. Or, in today's modern technological orientated world, an 'E' bomb! - You have been well and truly 'zapped'!

I liked this book, it brought too my attention something I hadn't given any thought too.
What would happen when people with Mental Health problems started too run out of drugs, I had thought about the druggies and the die off of people who are dependent on heart drugs, insulin ect.

Re: one second after
I just finished One Second After, yesterday - it was a really good read - there was one niggle that kept coming up for me tho - he kept saying, townies always think there's food in the countryside, and there isn't - but rationing doesn't start up in the town for ages, there's one little riotous night and then thats it, order is restored.
And it wasn't gun-heavy at all, very impressive. Realistic characterisation too - I think it must have helped a lot that he set it in his own home town and his place of work. And gave the character daughters. Very sweet that he gave the protagonisat two daughters - he has one, the age of the older one, I can see why he did that.
He's a good writer, and he's got some really good points to make.
