Ok well... tents in my opinion are not houses. The last thing you want to do is sleep in compartments. What you need is body heat. When I mountaineer we sleep in very cosy quarters and it helps allot. A large family size 'summer' tent is not going to keep you warm in winter without a large amount of energy. When I take the family camping, unless its weight restricted, I take a tipi tent and wood stove. We sleep in one space and cold is not a problem.

For winter camping without a stove you want to go small and intimate :)

Thermals
4 Season sleeping bags
One of those little camping fires (Black cat or one of the others)

Erect the tent indoors ;)

The kids and I have just spend 30 mins in the tent. 3 of us chittering away, my son fell asleep in seconds. I'm back in the house now with a hot brew and central heating...Note to self...must get decent sleeping bags, any recommendations?

Well, I stand by my last advice... Obviously you can get better sleeping bags that's a no brainer, but that's not going to make it a more comfortable environment in the long run. Soon as you are out of the bags it will be cold... Is this a bug out prep?

As above from Chef, the main thing is insulating yourself from the ground as that is where you will lose the most heat. Sleep close together, don't be afraid to go to sleep fully clothed if you are really trying the Bug Out type scenario and sleep with an empty bottle nearby..... Sometimes you wake up needing relief in the night and if it's freezing, getting out of your bag is the last thing you might want to do
