two people prep

Post by transformer84 »

hi, im totally new to prepping... what im looking for is a prep that can sustain my girlfriend and i for about a week. i say a week because any longer and i'll be going for the bob.

when it comes to prepping though, how many calories would you recommend per day? i know 2000 would prob be too much as i wont be running around and burning calories, plus anything left can go into the bob. i'm looking at tins and dried foods, i still need to find a way of storing water given limited space. as its for a week, would shop bought water bottles do (provided they are checked and rotated)

Starting out can be kind of scary and uncertain but remember that as you progress you will get more comfortable.

As a starter, look at what you eat regularly and see where you could start to add a few extra things on the list to build up a stock. As a starter for 10 here's what I looked at.

Rice and Pasta, great for carbs and bulking out meals, easy to store for long periods in Mylar bags, I aimed to get 15kg of each stored as it is cheap and easy to do.

Look to build up a store of longer life things in tins or dried that you don't mind eating on a regular basis to rotate. Think beans, tinned meals, tinned meats/fish, soups etc. For two people you are maybe looking at having maybe 50 cans stocked up to provide you with a good basis for a week. Best thing to do is sit down with some paper and work out what you would eat for a week and keep that much in stock, any over is insurance and tradeable.

In terms of water, I use regular drink bottles washed out and filled with water stored in the dark in a temp stable room. Rotate em every 5-6 months. I also have water butts outside with filters and tablets if needed. They say you can get by on 4l per day per person but I have aimed to have 10l pp mixed between straight drinkable in the bottles to the stuff in the butts for washing etc. the butts don't take a lot of space and are pretty much install and forget.

Everyone will have different views and I read a lot on here and other places when I started prepping but having a go and being prepared (no pun intended :D ) to get stuff wrong or change your ideas is part of the process.

Good luck!!!

get a few extra tins when you go shopping, eat what you store and store what you eat, dont buy something just cos its cheap if you wouldnt eat it normally, chances are it'll get lost in the back of the cupboard and never get eaten. oh yes! and, rotate, rotate, rotate, put your new tins at the back, old tins at the front so it gets eaten first.

The standard for water storage within the survivalist community is 1 gallon per day per person. So for two people 14 gallons for a week. That is only three camping jerrycans for your 7 days. Simple for you to store and very easy to rotate. I change mine every three months. A gallon a day is not a lot, but when there is none, it's a blessing. Jan and I have been there for a 5 day stretch and it ain't t fun
