mountain house - long term storage!

Post by #crabman# »

Hi
I have recently been looking at Mountain House Tinned food & I have found this seems to be very popular in the u.k. for long term storage.
I was wondering what other thoughts were on mountain house & if anyone new were to get the best deal :?:
Thanks.

The UK prices seem pretty similar from site to site which basically means very expensive. Due to the cost, personally, I don't see them as being the basis for any real volume of my long term storage needs. In addition I think you would be going hungry if you kept to their portion sizes. It's worth remembering that the sites calculate "3 months" or whatever period supply, as one meal per day.

I think they do have a place in your storage but, more as an addition rather than as the main source, better to buy cans and get digging. IMHO

Agreed, IMO it has it's place along with tins, dried and home-grown etc.

It is an horrendously expensive way to store food. What Hobo said.

Bloody Expensive ! When I need Mac & Cheese (missing a retching emoticon here) for 30 people I'll tell em to bugger off and spend the money on a better variety from Lidl's.

Yup, I'm a tight sod ! :D

Obviously with things like Mountain House cost can be daunting and even prohibitive, but there are 2 good reasons why it’s always been popular;

1. Shelf-life,
‘store what you eat, eat what you store’ is all well and good, but what if you don’t eat much tinned food? Or simply find trying to rotate hundreds of cans about as much fun as a visit to the dentist? In which case the extra money spent on the Mountain house is buying you a lot of convenience and time to spend on other projects.

2. Weight,
Almost all the tinned stuff you can buy in the supermarket contains a hell of a lot of water, take it away and pound for pound the freeze dried stuff suddenly doesn’t seem so expensive. Added to that, no matter how certain you are in your decision to ‘bug in’ there’s always the chance you’ll have to grab what you can and get out of there. Easier said than done when you’ve loads of awkward little tins

I agree. Tins can be a pain to rotate but you soon get a system sorted. However for longer term home grown is a very important factor.
But freeze dried is lighter and could be used in a bug out bag or a cache somewhere.

Consider why you need to purchase mountain house and not use another way of food storage.

Personally I like MH Freeze dried tins and have some walled up as long term "Iron Rations" storage. I consider it insurance and do not count it among my preps. It is just there and if, in 25 years, I have not used it I will still consider the money well spent. The up front cost is large, true, but amortized over 25 years, MH freeze dried food seems to me to be an extremely cost effective form of hunger insurance.

Just out of interest, where were you planning to purchase the Mountain House tins from?

still horrendously expensive, i dont want to spend £134+ all at one go, i like to buy a few extras every time i go shopping, i guess it would be ok to spend that much if you thought TSHTF was hitting next week or thursday fortnight :) and you had to stockpile..fast, but that would be the only time i bought in these quantities.
