i have never heard of these before til i seen a program last night of a couple restoring one in northumberland,
its a fortified farmhouse from the 15-17th century [roughly] when the border reivers were doing raids.

basically its thick stone walls ,slate roof as thatch burns and the ground floor was used for livestock and fodder, and the first floor was where the farmer and family lived,
access was a door set in the wall and a makeshift ladder was pulled up behind them and also a trap hatch inside.

the general idea is if danger loomed the stock was driven inside the door bolted and then up the hatch pulling the ladder in behind you.

now i already thought about if shtf of turning one of the downstairs rooms over for poultry and rabbits etc
so now my minds turning over of blocking off windows and using the rope ladders for window access and inside with the staircase being recycled for diy materials /firewood.

please bear in mind this is extreme measures for social breakdown, as i dont think my landlord would appreciate it ,
