99p Stores

Post by Attack Warning Red »

Was in our local yesterday. Here's a heads up:

Cyalume/glow sticks (green, 2 pack), emergency mylar blankets (2 pack), emergency mylar tunnel/tent shelter, camping cutlery/crockery. A bunch of other stuff under the guise of camping. Grab it soon before they clear the shelves for winter.

They often have a lot of handy stuff for the EDC in their camping aisle. I bought a metal water bottle (500ml) a couple of months ago and have been using it since and its very sturdy.

Nice. I normally don't see anything, well, good. :D I've been thinking of checking other cheaper stores. Was it a well-known 99p store or just an ordinary local one?

My local 99p stores has a great selection. I guess they are all pretty good so pay them a visit if you can, B+M are also very useful.

Went over to see a mate in Rotherham the other day, where there’s a fine selection; poundland, 99p store and a BM bargain all within a few hundred yards.

Got some WD40, 4 rolls of different coloured electrical tape and some plastic storage boxes, for a fiver carn't really go wrong.

They are great places to bulk up your preps. Batteries, toiletries, medicines(worth it with Winter coming)tools-I wish I could have bought some of the kit they sell when I set up home 20 and more years ago.
All in all, sift through the stores and find the treasures.

To add to what's mentioned already, prepp stuff I've got from £1 / 99p shops:

- Duct tape.
- Masking tape.
- String & light rope.
- Araldite
- Super glue (should have a place in your BoB medkit. It was originally developed as an emergency substitute for stitching wounds under combat conditions.)

- Those little push on/off 3xLED, 3xAAA "cupboard" lights - two for a quid! (I've seen 'em sold for £3 each elsewhere! I used to have a load of them rigged inside my narrowboat for cheapo winter lighting.)

- Mini LED torches, aluminium body, 8 LEDS, 1xAA. Also, "Dynamo squeeze" torches, 3 LEDs. (I have one each of these torches in my BoB / "Bofor" (Bosnian forage) bag.)

- Packs of 6 lighters and twin packs of hand sanitizer mini (50ml) bottles (That Bosnian chap mentioned in his blog that both of these were great trade items during SHTF out there).

- Vitamin C.
- Petroleum jelly.
- A small crowbar / tyre lever (small enough to fit in ^BoB / "Bofor", for urban foraging if SHTF, would also do for digging in a pinch)
- 6' square tarp.
- Leather work / garden gloves, tend to be crap quality and wear out fast, but at £1, who cares?
- Boxes of latex gloves.
- A small folding trowel, steel!
- Free standing solar / LED lights.
- Fishing line / hooks / floats / and a rod! :D
- A compass. (Quality varies. Double check it knows North from a hole in the ground).

Unless it's the only option, don't bother with:
- Any hammer / hatchet or mallet with a steel tube for a handle! Trust me it will bend / break :(
- Catapults from £1 / 99p shops. In my experience the steel rod used for the frames are far too thin, and the rubber tubing perishes very, very fast! Rubbish kit!

I just bought a single garden solar light to experiment with, its been sitting in a sunny window for a total of 3 days, there's an internal switch, and its been toggled both ways - doesn't work at all :( am I doing something wrong? They *seem* to work. I know I've got the right end pointed at the window, by t he way!

some of these have a little piece of plastic in the back that keeps the battery from contacting .have a look inb the battery compartment .

Thanks for that Red! I took the lighting bit off the support structure and, erm, I wasn't toggling the right thing at all. Can't get to the battery itself, and I'm pretty sure I won't have to now - thanks for encouraging me to examine it in more detail
