Water
As I store so much water anyway, I hadn't given much thought to tap water, but I've been storing all the empty bottles, and this week I've removed the labels and filled them all with tap water, we already have a burst water pipe outside, don't want to be using my stored water to flush the loo if the water gets cuts for any reason. I haven't treated the water with any thing, I don't plan to use it as drinking water, and I figured it has enough chemicals in it as it is, it tastes enough like bleach to me. yuk

Re: Water
I store bottled water for drinking and also bottles of baby sterilising solution (sodium hypochlorite) which you can use in place of bleach around the home and to purify water when these bottles are empty I fill them up with water to be used for washing, cooking, cleaning or drinking. I store baby sterilisng tablets for water purification too and intend to buy a water filtration system when funds allow.

Re: Water
Hi Guys,
I have been thinking a lot about water, with all the bursting water mains, rationing etc happening in various areas.
My plan is to add to my bottled water supply (which is currently 2.5ltrs a day per person for 28 days.)..this would be for drinking, washing and cooking. As smileyt said - the addition of a ceramic filter to my home kit will ensure I can keep the bottled water indefinitely.
A few things i need to think about would be extra for toilet flushing (I think a rain water barrel in the garden is the best solution).
The other thing that just occurred to me after reading some other posts - it seems a lot of preppers are focussed on building reserves of maybe 3+ months worth of food - but are maybe less focussed on at least matching that in water...no point in having 3months worth of food (which could be stretched to 4+ months if needed) when we only have say 6 weeks of water...
Maybe its only me that has mentally put a higher priority on food - but now i have thought about it - shouldn't it be the other way?
Cheers
Matt

I read that you should drink a minimum of 1.2 litres in the UK (Government Eat Well website) but there is no hard and fast rule regarding a specific amount. I generally aim for between 1.5 and 2 litres a day - more if I'm at the gym.

Re: Water
Itsy,
The 1.2ltr min per day is interesting - i was working on 2ltrs drinking, and 0.5ltr for washing / cooking. I guess it depends how much physical exercise I would be doing post SHTF. Maybe I have a little longer stored than I thought - still no where near my food levels though!
AxeIt,
Ref the filter - I think they are an essential piece of prep kit (for both filtering old bottled water and any water that can be sourced during a "situation")...the main problem I can see is - I don't want to be committed to leaving my property to source this essential resource, then having to carry it back home, all whilst who knows what is going on all over the country...
Cheers

You could have a few water butts set up to provide rain water that you could filter this could provide you with several hundred+ litres a week
