I'm having a bit of a blitz on phones at the moment ... so anything useful I find online, I'm going to post it here, hope thats okay. Even if people don't want to use things like payphones or public phone networks at all, its probably useful to know what situation they're in, if we're potentially near to collapse.
This is the first one - its from BT, and you can check the status of phone line service nationally. Only five ongoing nationally at the moment, which is fewer than I'd have thought, but maybe I've underestimated BT after all:

This is a national list of Text Direct phones - correct as of June 2006 can't see how this will be terribly useful, but it *is* a national list, sans numbers, so here we go:

This is about what payment forms are accepted - more than I'd have thought, its so long since I've used a payphone! The coins to collect are 10p, 20p, 50p and £1:

This one is really sweet, its, shall we say, an enthusiast's website - he's actually in the States, but some other enthusiasts have sent him UK phone numbers:

This is really interesting - more for parents wanting a backup of a backup, in that you register (at least) two mobiles and for a monthly payment one can call the other for 10 minutes free of charge at the point of call.

Free directory enquiries, you have to register:

This is an Ofcom agency, with a new name. On this page, you can check out a number you've found on your phone bill that you don't recognise:

And finally there's these people, if you're a millionaire. I typed in the name of my town, and they wanted £213 and pence before showing me the list. Just in case you win the lottery, here they are ...

Okay, I'm stopping now, but its been interesting. Its a cul de sac, and a minority interest one at that, but may have some potential value.
