Hedgerow harvest

Post by PreppingPingu »

Just a reminder about whats on offer in nature's larder atm. I was reading the cold n flu thread and it reminded me that rosehip syrup is a good 'un. I have been picking a small batch of blackberries every time I have been out this month and now I am collecting rosehips. (No one ever seems to harvest these these days so there is plenty on the bushes!) Rosehip syrup is good for adding to herby teas instead of honey, for adding to icecreams and pancakes etc or just a spoonful for added vit C to help our immune system before the winter onslaught. The other thing I keep meaning to collect are the elderberries I am still seeing.

What have any of you been collecting from the wild? (Remembering to leave enough for others and for nature! And remembering to only pick the stuff you are sure of -( Don't want any poisoned preppers out there!)

I've got lots and lots of rosehips in my garden, but they're very slow in turning red - can I use them green, does anyone know? Be nice to get the plants pruned, haven't done it since I moved here...

If you can't find rose hips to make syrup with you can buy it from Lakeland, great mixed with hot water for colds and on rice pudding.
