Freezing water

I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not but i'm giving it a try.

I was told to keep our chest freezer as full as possible to make it run efficiently. We are gradually building up our store of frozen goods but I can't afford to fill it. I've put some bread in there to take up some room and provide a supply if we get cut off for a few days like we did last winter.

I was also concerned about possible interupption to the water supply, so I've been sterilizing 2ltr pop bottles with Milton and filling them with tap water (leaving an air gap at the top. I've put these in the freezer, which fills up more space and if we have a power cut I hope will help to keep the freezer cold for longer and preserve our food stocks. As tap water is treated with chlorine, the bottles have been sterilized and then frozen, I'm hoping the water will be drinkable when thawed. I'll probably boil it and use it for tea/coffee etc just to be safe.

Has anyone else done this or is it not a good idea?

I cant see anything wrong with freezing water,we make ice cubes and drink them
