Canner / Canning

Post by Shymatty »

Hi,

I week or two ago my father bought a canner from america and it arrived the other day with some glass jars with a special 2 part lid.
He seems concerned about feeding himself and my sister and her family (they live in the same house). He has plans to turn a piece of land he has
into some plots to grow vegetables and to store them in jars using this canner.

I have read the instructions and have offered my help to deal with the "allotment" and if I purchase some jars of my own he said I could put some away for myself.

Any have one of these devices? Anyone got and tips for using it?

To me, putting a sealed vessel on the cooker and apply heat seems like a bad idea but i've been assured its safe :S

It is quite safe and canning is very popular over here together with dehydrating. Both methods can give you long term food storage for a fraction of the cost of purchased goods. I do some canning of jams, relishes and pickles etc. but not a lot of pressure canning. Is this something like what you were looking for on pressure canning? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-fFAlldDKM

Remember that you can reuse the jars and the lid rings as many times as you like but you have to use a new lid every time. So it's not a bad idea to stock up on a few dozen lids, they are pretty cheap. I have lots of recopies if you are interested that I have been given by other preppers.
It may never happen. Best to be prepared just in case.
