vacuum seal or mylar?

Post by Puffpuffmew »

Hi

Please forgive me if this is a really stupid question.. is it better to get a vacuum sealer and vacuum seal food or to get mylar bags and seal it in there? Does one last longer than the other, or are they better for different things?

For me it depends on the length of time you want to store for.

I've never bothered with a vacuum sealer, the ones worth having seem to be quite highly priced and I don't believe they achieve the same storage environment as Mylar and O2. Very good for extending the life of fresh fruit and veg, in your fridge though.

I do know a few preppers who use them.

If you want long term, ie years rather than weeks, then Mylar and oxy absorbers are the way to go.

Just my 2p's worth.

Mylar eventualy after time will slowly let air in so what I prefer to do is to put the contents in a mylar bag add the oxy absorber and then vacuum seal it. What it does is that the oxy absorber doesn't work straight away as the air is sucked out by the vacuum sealer. The oxy absorber will start to work only after some time (years) when the mylar slowly start letting air in. My way ;)
