Water Storage

Post by Paul_H »

Hi all

I have been having a think about water storage and I was thinking having bottled water is all well and good but water stored in plastic bottles over time suck the nasty stuff out the plastic and in essence poisons the water.

Im not sure how long all this takes or how much is absorbed into the water etc but it was just something I was thinking about.

What is the ideal storage for water im thinking maybe metal containers or maybe the ex mill ones. I will be going to a show early next year were there is some ex mil suppliers so I will be having a look at some of the kit there :) Trying to get my head around it all so I know what to get and when to get it.

I also have some water tabs on my ebay watch page and will be getting these down the line wondering if anyone has any advice on ones to avoid what to look for specificly etc

stay safe out there

I rotate my water and empty pop bottles twice a year, to be on the safe side.

I am sure that they wouldl last longer than that, and if TSHTF did occur, any ill affects from the bottles leeching would be the last thing on my mind. ;)
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

if you used food quality plastic containers there should be no problem with chemical leakage also if you use a two percent Tincture of Iodine (To use this add 12 drops per gallon of water. Note: pregnant or nursing women or people with thyroid problems should not drink water with iodine.) or use Chlorine Bleach( non scented, This should contain a 5.25% solution of sodium hypochlorite without soap additives or phosphates. Use 1/8 teaspoon (about 5-8 drops) per gallon of water.) it should last up to 5 years before it needs replacing you can also buy a commercially available Liquid Oxygen which does the same thing but it is expensive

For long term and safe use for water storage it is always safer to use food grade water containers that have not been used for any other purpose. You can buy them from Halfords or Argos if you are only after one or two, but if you are looking to build up a large quantity for several weeks or months supply (consider what hurricanes Katrina and Sandy have done to the water supply over recent years!), then here is a site where you can buy in bulk at better prices: http://www.ampulla.co.uk/Shop-For-Plast ... 7-170-112/ . This site is also great for large storage buckets if planning to store large quantities of anything. I have used them before and they are very helpful if you have any questions.

Most of the water on the planet has been here for several billion years I guess, and I'm still drinking it ;)

I would rotate it out every 6 to 12 months depending what method of storing I had gone for.

I keep about 40litres in bottles in a cool dark place and rotate every 6 months. I also have 200 litres in outdoor storage which can be filtered using a berkey if needed. I then have a water plan knowing where I can obtain further water as needed if it isn't raining. If I get the chance, I will be expanding my outdoor storage some more this year.
