Antibiotic resistance

Post by Leo1 »

On the BBC web site today
The chief medical officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, said: "Antibiotics are losing their effectiveness at a rate that is both alarming and irreversible

So i think within 10/15 year's we will be back to the early 1930's where we had no amtibiotics.

Now i would like to hear your through's on this

Even before reading the article I can tell you that antibiotics are issued too readily by docs, especially to over sensitive parents who take little jonny to the docs with a cold. That is why they are not working so well any more.
I always  when someone says they have laryngitis - a sore throat then!!! Or they have the 'flu' but continue to come to work! Really......the flu will have you confined to bed for days ( in my experience).

We have to let our bodies fight some infections and learn to recognise what needs antibiotics and what doesn't.

^^ THIS!
I remember being told nearly 20 years ago now by an ex-boyfriend's mum to not rely on antibiotics and she explained how bacteria could become resistant. I've avoided antibiotics as much as possible since then so that if I ever *really* needed one (touch wood I don't) the medicine would actually work. My mum doesn't like that I refuse to get antibiotics when I have a bad cold (or even flu for that matter), but I'm sticking to my guns!

Actually, after having flu twice in the last two years, it forced me to rethink what I thought was a cold and what was flu. The previous year I was pretty damn poorly, but the one last New Year? Crikey moses! It addled my brain a bit and let me think I could still move about when really I should have been horizontal for a lot longer than I was. I remember being able to walk about as long as I didn't turn my head because then the world went all spinny. :( Travelling back from home after Christmas was entertaining. 3 hours on a coach and then I don't remember how I got home from Victoria Station. :? I only ever want to be in that situation if I've been drinking! When I did get home, it was to a temperature of 38.8...

However if you read the article linked you will see:

" Do remember that antibiotics cannot help you recover from infections caused by viruses, such as colds or flu.
The HPA said the last point was one of the common misconceptions among the public.

Dr Cliodna McNulty from the HPA said: "We all seem to forget just how awful you can feel with a bad cold, let alone flu, and this maybe makes us think that we are more poorly than we really are and that we need antibiotics to get better.

"But this isn't the case and using your favourite over-the-counter medicines that can help to ease headaches, aching muscles and stop your nose running will make you feel a lot better."

Moony: I know that antibiotics don't help viruses like colds or flu, but my mum doesn't seem to get it!

I was told, however, during an asthma review that when I get a bad cold or flu that I should come into the surgery if my asthma is noticeably worse in case I have a chest infection - in which case they would possibly give antibiotics. During the New Year bout, I managed to drag myself into the doctors when my temperature had come down to manageable levels because once my head cleared I realised my breathing was a bit wonky. Thankfully no chest infection, but advice to up my inhaler for a bit. Suited me fine :)

And critically FINISH THE DAMN COURSE.
