Snow Chains

Post by mike.f »

Just wanted to do a quick mini review on an item that for me over the last two weeks has been my most valuable piece of kit.

These snow chains have meant that on three occasions I have managed to get to my destination with ease where others have got into tremendous amounts of difficulty.

Just yesterday I managed to negotiate an icy lane where leaving an assortment of vans and cars stuck at the bottom (Yes it also involved three trips ferrying people up to the main road!)
The chains take around 3/4 minutes to put on and just under two minutes to take off. The longest journey so far was around 11 miles and I found there to be now problems – just quite a few envious looks.

Unfortunately the site I purchased them from is showing unavailable at the moment but hopefully they will get more.

Hope this helps anyone thinking of improving their BOV.

Yeah have thought about getting some, gota say my car held the road well but I think a lot of it down here any way is the way people drive, I watched another focus slipping and sliding out of the car park and I got in and out with no problems, but think snow chains would be handy for the future.

My car was pretty solid in the snow, but would be better with some winter tyres, and even some snow chains for when its compacted snow into ice. Most places are out of stock at the moment, but some ebay sellers are getting more stock in on the 6th Jan....

Couldn't agree more. One of the reasons I thought about joining the forum was that in the recent 'White deluge' the A9 or 'the only road this far north' got blocked and food couldn't get delivered to the supermarkets. It would be useful to actually get to a BOL or even a cache if you needed to.

I hate the A9, is almost as bad as "my" road, the A7.

Hi Guys
As a 4x4 offroader "snow chains are not just for christmas" well snowy conditions but are great when dealing with deep mud to. We've always have snow chains in the Landrover, and use them through out the year.

Wish we had them this year, only been out about 4 times since the beginning of December and its still pure white outside. We live in a steep cul de sac and even if you can get up there, then you havre to get to the main road. The whole village spent hours and hours shovelling away this winter. Then the plough comes and shoves it all back over the cars again  Supposed to thaw tomorrow though ..

i did see a programme a few weeks ago where you could buy Tyre Socks or something! basically a tyre shaped cover that works like a hessian sack under the tyre, Cheap and will get you out of most problems (short term) apparantly Halfords sold out pretty quickly.

I have also seen those snow socks. I was going to get some when the snow appeared but the snow disappeared before I could get some to try out. I live in the East and we rarely get snow that stays around for longer than a couple of days. Seems a perfect answer if I get stuck away from home when it snows. They were created in Norway, so should be well tested!

Would love to know if anyone has used them.

I'm just not convinced by the snow socks. They might be alright on flat ground over fresh snow, but I can't see them working on compacted ice on a hill?

Imagine putting socks over your waking boots and running up a hill?! It would end badly!

Chains grip through the ice and give traction, the same as wearing crampons!

I would have to see snow socks in action before I purchased a set!
