New member from Bristol

Post by Brunel »

Hi everyone - I live just outside Bristol and my principal concern is the possibility of an economic/banking collapse and the chaos that could ensue. So far my prepping has consisted of getting in enough food for me and my partner to survive for a year or so; seeds to plant; water purification kits, as well as other odd items such as a few rolls of muslin! I have several guns and am well stocked with ammunition, knives and defensive equipment, outdoor clothing and footware. I have good sources for water, wood, rabbit, deer; 24 brick rocket stove etc. I've also researched a couple of alternative locations, should the need arise. I'm hoping to learn other skills here to assist the transition to a more self-sufficient life-style.

Welcome to the forum - thats a lot of skills and supplies you already have, congratulations! What do you feel are the holes in your prep, what kind of area are you looking at training in next?

Hi Terry - I'll drop you a PM later, would be useful to swap ideas.

I probably need more 1st aid/trauma supplies. I also always forget to buy vinegar which has 1,001 uses. My neighbours variously keep chickens, geese, pigs, goats and one is a bee-keeper - I'm definitely keeping in with them!

I'd like to learn more about generators - solar or wind - and how to bodge one together. Has anyone tried a Biolite stove? It's the one with the thermo-couple which converts heat to recharge batteries, lights, phones etc. Looks a bit flimsy to me but I'd appreciate a heads up and wonder whether it wouldn't be cheaper to knock one up with general household kit.

One of my main concerns is I live off a main arterial route out of Bristol - in a crisis I can easily see it becoming gridlocked and once people start getting out of their cars they become a swarm of locusts. Securing a decent defensive perimeter will require a few more weapons-trained ninjas! With a dodgy knee, my move and fire drills aren't as sharp as they could be. I've got a trusty bolt action .22 (Remington 512) and an even trustier s/s 12 bore (AYA Yeoman) and the neighbours all seem well equipped too - we should be able to deter most looters and if anyone does try to get through the pigs won't be short of food!
