What Are You Hoping To Grow This Year?

Post by NorthernWoody »

For this on here who have allotments, land, pots, gardens, windowsills - whatever.

What are you hoping to grow? 2012 was a terrible year for me crop-wise. I managed to get some decent rhubarb, tomatoes, new potatoes but all my peas, beans, raspberries, strawberries, beetroot and carrots were ruined.

This year I am going to plant in every available orifice - well nearly!
And try my luck as much as possible. On the definite list are pretty much everything above plus cut and come again salad leaves, cucumbers (they were great in 2011), potatoes, courgettes and cabbages.

Now I've found a decent heirloom seed site, I'll be starting to grow this year. Soil here isn't brilliant, and it's a very wet place, so I'm going to use the old Lazy Bed method - and if your gardens got rained out last year, might be an idea for you too.

I'll be growing to eat, preserve and save seed, so it'll take a wee while to get this running right. But:

Tatties
Turnips
Onions
Leeks
Carrots
Garlic
Oca

In a polytunnel

Strawbs
Herbs
Tobacco
Peppers

And anything else I come across that my mob will eat.

Lazy Bed method - being a relative newbie to veg gardening I had to google this, but what a great idea!

It's been around for a very long time, but it's still used today in some places and seems to work very well where the rainfall is above average. Hope it's some use to you and anyone else that tries it :)

Last year we tried carrots, onions, beans and garlic but because of the lovely weather nothing really grew well. Will probably just give those a stab again as we're fairly new to gardening. Previous attempts at butternut squash and pumpkins failed too lol
