Just a Thought...

Post by paratus »

Hi Guys and Girls. Was having a think today and remembered at school (I was sent away to boarding school) there was a little "hangover" from the air raids of the second world war. Each night at "lights out" we were expected to fold our clothes we'd been wearing into what we called a "bundle". Lay your jumper (for example) out, place the rest of your clothes in, fold each arm in and then the bottom of the jumper up and carry it like a case (hand griping the collar and bottom of jumper.) The reason I thought I'd mention is lots of Preppers (if not all) have BOBs etc for SHTF scenarios but what if you wake up to a house fire for example rather than an apocolyptic type situation. Having something to wear while you await fire brigade etc will keep you warm. Add essential BOB to your car and you now have a close-by retreat "location" maybe?. As I'm new to prepping this resonates with me as I haven't as yet completed a BOB that would contain blanket(s) maybe, so a good basic habit to form to make sure your ready for the elements. By the by, during fire drills in the dead of night, we were severally told off if we forgot our "bundle". Guess they were instilling a good prepper attitude from day one!

I usually just press the "active threads" button when I come on here, and for some reason I'm getting a whole load of threads with just one or two entries - I'm bookmarking lots at the moment. This one here is such a good suggestion, though, I couldn't resist giving it a bump. I've been in hotels in the past when the fire alarm has gone off, and we've had to evacuate at 3am ... both times, I happened to be either on the ground floor, or right next to the fire escape, so I had time to dress, but if I'd had to get up and run, doing *something* like this would have been a real boon :D

That's a great idea - now I know why I always wanted to go to boarding school
Arzosah we were in a hotel fire in Cork once, and it was chaos. Americans charging up and down the corridor bellowing, Italians screaming and yelling, and a really bossy English woman bawling like a sergeant major. We stayed in the room and had a cup of tea until they found that some drunk had set it off for a laugh

It does sound much more like a fire plan or as described and air raid plan in wartime, nevertheless as one who sleeps in the altogether I appreciate the need for something to wear being close at hand, If I wear clothes to bed I invariably wake up like a poor excuse for an excapologist almost to the point of needing assistance to get untangled, even if the alarm wakes me, my clothing is quickly gotten into first, if you're going to practice anything then dressing quickly and evacuating the house with something warm to sling on is a sound idea.
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I'm a bit of a spotter and always ask for a room on the lowest floor possible and near a fire exit. I also walk the routes out, and check for extinguishers/blockages etc.

I do something similar everywhere, cinemas, shopping centres, rugby stadiums

I check the fire escape route in hotels now ... I should just add, though, that the two times I had a hotel fire alarm go off, I was at science fiction conventions, and about half the attendees were still up. In fact, both times it was set off by people dancing so hard that dust and smoke effects triggered the fire alarms  I'm not kidding, honestly, thats what I was told the next day.

We do have an 'evac sac' that has clothes for all 4 of us should we need to evacuate the house at night. It's just a cheap holdall with a change of clothes, a fleece and a cheap poncho each. I've also put some cash in there in case we need a taxi and/or hotel. Since we live in a terrace we will wake the neighbors and, hopefully, get refuge there at the outset.

Pretty much my exact scenario and planning. Should I be required to make a dash with the family we have the essentials at hand pretty much straight away.
