Information, Knowledge and Wisdom are any preppers must have item. You can take it (them) with you wherever you go.
It is so often underestimated.
Forget about splurging on expensive items. Multitools: Gerber vs Leatherman. All you need to focus on is Instinct vs Intuition.
As my grandmother used to say; "Lead with your head, but follow your heart and you will never get lost."
Just thought i'd share that with everyone.
Information, Knowledge and Wisdom
Re: Information, Knowledge and Wisdom
Some wise words there Eskimo, No point spending £100 on a leatherman that might not get used often, but not having a water cleaning system that allows you to drink.

Re: Information, Knowledge and Wisdom
I'm new to prepping, but a prioritised and structured approach is how I'm inching forward with my plans (which also keeps on developing!). Short term goals are underway and include:
- Improved home security e.g. Rockdoors, better outdoor lighting, upgrades to alarm & cctv systems. Some real expense here hence being top of my short-term priorities.
- New pantry for food storage. My boiler finally gave up in Nov so I decided on a combi-boiler in the airing cupboard upstairs (where the water cylinder used to be). This made available a fairly large space under the stairs that was previously dead-space. I'm now mid-way through stripping it back to block work before the re-fit process begins. This will be a main food storage space.
- In Feb I'll be investing in a Big Berkey. I've researched lots of options, including DIY but have decided this is my preferred way forward.
- When the weather picks up I'll be building a rain water harvesting system using 3+ waterbutts & the house roof!
- I'll also be getting a couple of CB units in the next couple of months (rec'd lots of advice via this forum on this ). Already bought an analogue radio.
- The OH and I are also thinking about the type of clothing we have; incl. shoes etc. There'll be changes to that from here on in!
Etc. etc.
I plan on posting some pics of the Pantry effort as the project drifts long.
I certainly think getting the basics nailed before worrying too much about everything else is the way to go - I'm not competing for the unPrepped Prepper award! I'm guessing it will take a good 18-24 mths to achieve a reasonable level of knowledge and have the foundations in place....... a lottery win would be useful!

Rockdoors great idea almost forgot about them
http://www.rockdoor.com/
Looks like a normal front door but 100 times stronger , drug dealers love them , police hate them , just make sure they are installed correctly .
For good prices try Gap Plastics they sell rock doors
http://www.gap.uk.com/
Outside lights , hmmmmm maybe , maybe not , advertising your there and something to protect , same with alarms ,I know when I lived in Glasgow they would throw a brick through the window and with the alarm going off if no lights went on , in they would go to get the plasma etc, its only noise after all.
CCTV great , but when there's no power ..........
Great ideas
Pantry. Great idea, long time fan of going back to old times , when everyone had one , made jam ,pickled stuff, etc, now its all just in time ordering , no slack in the system
For rain water harvesting , have you thought about Ibc containers 1000 liters and can interconnect with simple plumbing

Re: Information, Knowledge and Wisdom
I first discovered Rockdoors at The local Gap a couple of weeks ago. A bit of research later and my mind is set. I've got a guy coming round in a couple of weeks to survey etc.
Outside lighting is a necessity. The house is set back from the road and doesn't benefit from too much street lighting. I use 10w LED lights - dear to purchase, relatively cheap to run considering how much light they throw out. All switched by a dusk/dawn jobby. A longer term project is installing solar panels so that's another reason for choosing low consumption LED.
I already have 4 cameras in situ, have had for >5 years. People do notice them so to my mind they make me a lesser target. Truth is they've not been powered for at least 4 years! I might just run power to them to switch on the LEDs, keep them clean and leave it at that. If the power network fails, I'm not too worried, there'll be bigger issues to deal with.
Pantry only came about because if circumstances, quite a result really!
I have seen those IBC containers but the space I'm thinking of using is completely out-of-view and discrete which is great from a staying-under-the-radar perspective, but does limit the size of container. To get things started I'll be going for 3 of these -

A key driver to much of the above is the fact there are regular burglaries where I live. I agree with keeping a low profile but I have to do what I can within reason and based on our means to protect my family. Failing that my dog would love to say hi to anyone with undesirable intent
