Recent Snow - what have you learnt?

Post by Sscotdave »

Over the last few days the country has been hit hard by the snow. (except here in central Scotland for a change)

What I would like to konw is. What have you learnt as a result of this?

For me it's been that the media will make the situation worse than it needs to be by hyping up the effects, talking about shortages, panic buying etc.
Most people are unprepared for any change in their routine. Even regular changes such as the onset of winter.
If a small situation lasts a few days most people are OK but if it goes over a week most resort to battening down the hatches and I'm allright Jack so sod you type attitudes.
If we had a real SHTF situation probably about 80% of the population would last less than a few months.

This seems a bit pessimistic but thats what I am seeing.

What do you think?

agreed.... plus,

My Jeep goes anywhere still in the snow.
There is no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes.
I need a couple of these snood type things and perhaps a balaclava (but not for bank robb'in).
The recharging of my vehicle batteries at the start of the winter to prepare pays dividends.
I'm possibly going to buy some of those army issue mittens.

And as you've said Sscotdave, the slightest variation from the norm or minor adversity really seems to effect some people!

Hand-break turns in a Land rover are fun, Anti-lock brakes aren't fun.

My preps were enough to get us through it without a problem. :D

I was glad my preps were more than enough but we lacked chocolate

My neighbour does not have enough to get through 1 day! Hmmm, I'll keep very quiet about mine then!

I hate driving in the snow.

I need to invest in some warm, snug fitting wellie socks as there is nothing worse that socks sliding off inside your wellies...

A 4x4 is only as good as its driver.
Just because it looks like a 4x4 and the advert says it can go anywhere , do not leave tarmac , you will get stuck.
Driving at 10mph does not mean your invincible to skidding.
Maybe selling the snow tyres before christmas to buy wee johnny a ps3 wasnt a good idea.
Be Prepared.
Plan like its the last loaf on the shop shelves.
Plan like its the last beer in the fridge.

I hate too admit it but too make sure I have a jack and wheel brace  id left it at home after sorting the discovery. Had a puncture today and had to go begging for the above which isnt easy when you live in the middle of nowhere, Also will be sorting out a proper car kit,Food, water, clothing etc as I experienced a little panic due to minus temperatures, snow on the ground and my wife in the car.

Erm...problems with your 4x4?

I have learned that camping in the snow and at sub-zero temperatures is a fun experience (I did this last year, too), there's no better way for getting to know Mother Nature, and yourself, than be out there in all seasons.

Ace. :)
