I've been thinking about this for a long time - its probably not particularly useful for if tshtf, but in relation to ordinary house fires, yes, it could avoid a lot of inconvenience in re-establishing your life!
I had a quick look on Amazon - bog standard seems to be about £20, no idea how *good* they are, of course. I'm thinking £40 is more like it, but no idea if thats true, or even what brands, tho Sentry sounds like its good.
Any recommendations?
Fire proof document etc storage
Re: Fire proof document etc storage
We got one from Staples a couple of years ago (about £200), digital combination lock with key back-up. Luckily we havn't had a fire to test it but it is fairly heavy (40kg's ish) but quite a small volume inside. You need to figure out what you want to store to make sure its big enough. we have house deeds, spare cheque books / cards / keys / vehicle docs etc and it all takes space

We are stuck in the same predicament , apart from title deeds that really cannot be replaced , what about scanning and storing it all on the cloud , yes i know its not 100% safe but if its only copies to get originals back , might this be an option ??

Just had a look at fire safes, looks like the rating on the smaller (cheaper) models is around 30 minutes, the bigger (expensive) models is an hour.

Although perhaps not relevant to you, I keep DVD-R back-ups of my data at my dad's house. This includes my digital photos and audio project and master files (I'm a musician).
So if it all goes pear-shaped at my house, I know there's a back-up off-site.

That's a great idea, I did a similar thing with photographs when on holiday, copied them from the camera chip onto the laptop and then made disc backups, also uploaded them to an on-line store, just in caseAttack Warning Red wrote:Although perhaps not relevant to you, I keep DVD-R back-ups of my data at my dad's house. Safes are something that you really do get what you pay for, you also need to know what they are rated for in terms of digital media, paper etc. For work we go for at least an hour, digital plus paper for temps of 900-1200. They are pricey but remember, the idea is to last long enough for the fire to go out or be put out and keep your belongings safe enough to recover.
Also, check for ones that are properly tested and accredited to BS standards or similar.

I've scanned all my documents and keep them on a flash drive clipped to my BOB and I've emailed them to myself so I've a copy online too.

I made something with two things in mind fire and CME...get a 55 gallon steel drum with the strap on lid and a smaller one with a stap down lid. Get two 100 ltr bags of V4 Vermiculite add some to the bottom of the 55 gallon barrel then center your second barrel inside the first. Now pack around V4 in the gap leaving room to get the lid on the center barrel, once you have your stuff to stay safe put inside lid on and top up to the top of the 55 gallon and put the lid on.
you should then have a fire and CME safe area, injoy.
