Best Search & Rescue Tool?

Post by tacticalprepper »

This may seem a little absurd to a lot of people but hear me out...

Imagine the scenario, there's been a hurricane (or other disaster) which has left a building seriously unstable but you've taken the responsibility to ensure no one is trapped inside. Are you going to risk your own life? Don't be silly! Build the right tool for the job - a remote control 4x4 with a live camera feed to scout out the building for you.

This little piece of kit is purely a prototype at the moment. Its a bit too small and fragile to really scout out buildings, but all of the relevant technology has been tried and tested to good standards. The car its self is custom made four wheel drive with incredibly powerful motors to get out of trouble. it can travel up to an impressive distance of 1km without loosing signal - and if your willing to spend even more, you can go 10km+! The camera is mounted inside the car, using a separate battery to prolong usage times and using a separate transmitter will give a signal twice the distance of the car - right to my TV.
For all the COD fans, it is literally like a RCXD but without the explosives.

I believe that I'm really on to something with this. Its taken a lot of research and about £200 but as a safe method of scouting out buildings for injured person(s), its a small price to pay. Hope you've liked it, take a look at the pictures and let me know what your thoughts are :D

The final outcome:

Couple of things

Is it safe to use in a explosive atmosphere is it safe or could the electrical components generate a spark to ignite a broken gas main

So you've found someone buried under a fallen house....... then what?

Would you not be better using it to check ahead of you to see who's round the corner before you are ?

Great idea but there's loads out there

I love it! I'm a complete outsider to all this, of course, and the previous posters sound like they know what they're doing. You've obviously alerted the cat :D in your photo ...

And I do like the idea of scouting around corners ...

Stairs? :D

Stairs aside, it's a great idea. Although I think you can get hovering drone-type ones that fly. Either that or I dreamed it...

Its been done at a fairly low cost already.

Building a large scale rc robot is really not that hard, although from every current rescue/search/bomb robot, tracked is really the worthwhile option. Robot wars showed even a dad and his kids can build one. You need to make it fairly large to get up stairs.

http://www.active-robots.com/ sells parts

You will need basic sheet metal skills to build a chassis but past that its like lego, you just buy the parts and plug them into each other.

Anyone looking for a UAV might want to check out http://diydrones.com/ , its not even hard to build your own system for searching mountains.

At the moment, I don't think it would be safe in a gas-filled environment unfortunately. I'm sure there must be a way to prevent sparks?
In that situation, you've found someone, you can now get a good idea of the potential risks inside the building before going in yourself. If you've scouted out the building already and there is no one inside then great, you've taken yourself out of a potentially risky situation where limited medical help is avlible. Not to mention that walking over weakened floor boards is dangerous, this thing weighs about 1kg! 8-)
And yes of course, multi-purpose perhaps? :D

I only wish I could fly a plane/helicopter, great potential there!

The cat loved it! Well... I think he did anyway  Its actually not too difficult to be honest, a bit of chopping this wire, soldering that one etc... I learned most of in in a few evenings.

Stairs are a bit of a problem, I have to admit. I was thinking of buying a Rc tank, not that expensive surprisingly!
As far as what you mentioned, take a look at this (not my video) but awesome!

Some great links, thank you for that! And absolutely, you've got the right idea! I'm surprised the police don't use a larger version of these instead of police helicopters? That way we could have 10 per county rather than sharing one helicopter between 2, the cost in fuel alone for one helicopter will pay for the extra staff to fly UAV's (creating more jobs). much better use of money and good all round!
