Bug out bag size?

Post by Pointboy »

Would a 34 litre 5.11 rush 12 be big enough for a few day bug out bag?

are you in a position to try it and see? or have you not got the bag yet? :D

obvious answer is it depends on how much you prepare to pack ;)

As essgee says, depends what you want to put in it. Don't forget about maximum weight loading. Without knowing what your kit consists of, it's difficult to say. Also, the bigger your bag, the more you will find to put in it. You will have to carry this, so be realistic.
I have a medium ALICE pack that's my camping bag I think that's about 40L and can pack 50lbs. I can carry all necessary camping kit and up to a weeks worth of food in, or strapped on, to it. Conversely my camping buddy has a humungous 75L jobbie and still struggles to find room for everything, and can't carry the darn thing either.

Best option is get all the gear together and then find a bag to fit.

Almost everyone seems to get the bag and then find its way oversized or (much more likely) too small.

I suppose thats why I try to think of it as a 'Ditch Kit' rather then a 'Bag'.... Emphasis should be on kit not bag

Question: How much does the bag cost ?

Ask yourself this, wouldn't it be better to spend the money on the gear rather then the bag?

I have seen a BoB posted (elsewhere) that was a $500+ Kifaru bag with less then $80 worth of gear inside it (and the guy added that he hadn't got a sleeping bag as he couldn't afford one :x )

The bag is going to cost 89 pound and I'm willing to spend that because i have a rush 12 and it is brilliant and yeah I know what you mean bout think of equipment first, well I won't be getting the bag for a bit but maybe I will have some more stuff and maybe the cash for the bag as well haha

Would you manage a few days on a camping trip with that little bag?

A full 72 hour kit with the essentials only is going to need something a tad bigger, I personally wouldn't look at less than a 45ltr for the basic long weekend camping trip without access to normality.

I think with the rush twelve i would be able to fit a lot of things in but not like everything
