Laundry Powder (budget beater!)

I've recently made my own laundry powder concoction which is way more economical than a box of Daz and works great!

Half cup baking soda (59p per 500g)
1 cups washing soda (£1 per kg)
1 bar of soap, finely grated ("free" as I have loads I made, but you could use Asda value white soap for pennies)
1 cup Oxyclean powder (89p per tub for discount generic brand)

I made this small batch just to try it out at first, and this makes about as much as you'd get in a small box of laundry powder. The bonus is, you only need to use one or two tablespoons of the stuff! I've not tried it on heavy soiled clothes yet, but for everyday washing it's great.

Prices for the ingredients will obviously vary and I have loads left to make more batches.....mega cheap, no nasty chemicals and a space saver!

Thanks for this, Duckie. I've just bought two bottles of Sainsbo Basics laundry liquid - I'll see how that goes. Then I thought, I really want a recipe like this for dishwasher tabs (only had a dishwasher for a few years, and I really like it, but I feel clueless, so I always use the tabs). Looked online, and actually own brand Wilko have some of the good 5 in 1 tabs, own brand, half the price of the branded names in the ordinary supermarkets - about 8p per tab. And *then* I thought, well, whats Oxiclean? Sainsbo and Tesco and Wilkinsons don't sell it any more, so I looked at the ingredients, googled the name, and came up with a thread on my lovely moneysavingexpert forum: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/sho ... php?t=3788 seems like its the hydrogen peroxide thats the crucial ingredient - tho they *do* say its untested. I must print this stuff out!

I tend to keep 6months + of laundry detergent and buy when on offer but any alternative would be most welcome. I already use the first two ingredients as laundry washing supplements anyway so it makes perfect sense to me! The only thing I would need to buy is the oxiclean as I have all else.

That's great Ferricks. You'll find the recipe is a great space saving alternative. I got my Oxyclean/Vanish Oxy type stuff (the Oxy powder you add to laundry as a booster) from Discount UK. Poundland do it too.

One problem I always used to have with the value washing powders is that the stuff never used to dissolve properly in the washing machine and the washing came out an interesting shade of grey with little solid pieces of dry washing powder stuck ti it. If you do use value washing powders it is an idea to completely dissolve a batch in warm waster and then pour the water directly into the drum before putting the clothes to be washed in the drum.

My mum used to make a homemade Baileys when I was a child, I seem to remember evaporated milk and brandy (not whiskey). I'll ask her if she still has the recipe. I probably have all the ingredients in my food storage. I'll start a new topic if I get the recipe
