CCTV?

Post by dannytsg »

Just like to get people's opinions on CCTV and if you have it installed at your main property/residence?

I am currently looking into getting camera's installed at the front of my house and the rear covering my garden/driveway. We have had recent incidents of vandalism and ASBO behaviour and have taken advice as this being one of the safest ways to protect the home whilst being a productive way to capture evidence.

Does anyone have CCTV on their home but geared towards a prepping purpose?

maplins does seem to have the cheapest sytems. we have a dummy cam up just now but may go for the full whack when funds become available. alternativley, a large tyre iron may help you deal with the asbo problem :D
A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week./

If the tyre iron approach didn't land me in hot water then maybe but I want to stay on the right side of the law.

As for the system I'm planning on having one camera on te front and one on the back and having either a continuous 24 hour record or a time set image capture.

the 500gb hard drive is good for 180 days constant recording , then it starts to over write itself

Just had a 3 camera system installed. Not sure how much of a deterrent it is but it does provide a certain amount of reassurance as to gather evidence.

I think you also have to consider that it might attract a certain type of person who wants to know why you have them (and couldn't give a fig about beiing caught on film).

I live in a semi-rural place and was given the advice that a dog is the best deterrent/alarm you can have..... by people who have a lot of experience.

I love my huge German Shepherd

Hope that helps.

I have a dog but he is a miniature Yorkshire terrier courtesy of my wife choosing him from a pup and don;t see him as much of a deterrent at all

I am aware that they can attract attention as well but my main reasoning for getting them is to ensure that should someone try to encroach on my property without my permission I have enough evidence to allow the authorities to pursue them.

I'm sure the terrier is a great alarm though! :D

I hadn't considered my CCTV as part of my prepping, if I'm honest, as I assumed I wouldn't have the electricity to run it. For me that would be more of a 'batten down the hatches' time.

A good, reliable source of electricity is one of the things I need to work on, at the moment I'm at the beginning of my journey and trying to get to grips with food, heat, light etc.....

I'll add CCTV to the growing list list of things I haven't prepared for yet! haha :D

Megiddo: Preps aren't just about TEOTWAWKI, preps are just another form of insurance for those little bumps in the road we all encounter.
If someone commits a crime against your property and you can supply the coppers with some good images of the scumbag doing it them the CPS are more likely to believe they can get a result and therefore charge the bugger.

CCTV and alarms are security preps, same as locks and household insurance

Now, I'm going to have a look at that Maplin link

If money is an issue you could always rig up webcams. I have no idea how much I paid for mine but they have a motion detection option in the software and I bought some USB extension leads to hook up to my old PC they work quite well and my next door nabour's kids no longer through rubbish over they're back garden, and no more kids 'ring and diching' my house.

The webcams make are 'creative' but I would think that the software is more important than quality of shots taken.

Planning to prepare is not preparing. If you've got money in abundance help others without it. If you don't have money READ! information can be more helpful than money in many instances and share what you learn.
