Old discarded tyres...

Post by DreamOfPrepping »

Walking through my old stomping ground the other day I couldn't help but notice the discarded tyres. There must have been 5 or 6 dozen of different sizes and treads.

Other than reusing them as plant pots (and one other use which I don't think would be good) I can't see what to use them as...

Any Ideas?

These may be of some use:

Not sure as to what may suit your needs but it might get your mind ticking over on it.

Apart from the obvious earthship option, why not have a go at making one of these.
They look so cool and you could sell them for good money and just pay me a commission. ;)

This is all very well and good in theory, I'm all for making use of 'waste', however FYI 'Keeping waste tyres without a licence is a crime.'. Bold type-face used in original document for emphasis.

So if you are growing potatoes in old tyres or whatever, for perfectly good 'green' reasons, and you are not a registered waste handler, you are breaking the law.

Wholy Pinching Crabs Batman!! I'm glad you let me know about that law I was about to go out today to collect them all.

What a stupid law. They are a major eye-saw and I thought I'd be doing the world a favour by getting rid of 'em but not at the risk of breaking the law.

I have had a dislike of this country for a while but now I truly hate this place.

So tell me all those school and Eco friendly gardening organisations that use tyres have a licence to be a registered waste handler?

I'm sure that the environment agency has more to worry about than a few households using them to grow spuds....if you know what I mean! ;)

Hiya,

Unfortunatly the best use of these is to gassify them and distill the syngas into liquid fuel or burn the syngas in generators.

I know this sounds very tree hugger and technical.

What is really frustrating is that the process I am describing is what germany did during WWII to produce fuel for their war machine. They did not use used tyres as per say. The process works for most anything that can be burned.

Why is it not being done now with the huge amount of waste society produces? You got me. Probably a bit of business interests, politics and just stupidity.

I swear this is not a rant or anything.

I do wish that as preppers we could tap into this subject a bit. Lots of stuff just lying around that could be used.

Thanks

I quite agree with the sentiment preppingusu, but as the mods like to ensure they don't appear to endorse anything that's illegal I thought I'd link the correct legal situation and let our members decide for themselves what action they wish to take (or not). It is a stupid law, but with thousands being illegally dumped each year the EA has to take some action and it's often hard to secure prosecutions without the law being clear that either you have a waste handlers licence or not - if you don't and you possess old tyres then you break the law - simple

I use old tyres as beds. Just posted a thread about planting spuds and how to grow them in tyre stacks.

I'll be planting seeds in some of the 40 odd we've got left on Friday. And then there will be herbs as well.

I can't help thinking that whilst it might be to the letter of the law to prosecute someone like me, it's nothing to do with the spirit of the law, which is just as important. We got ours from a licensed bloke, and he formally asked us what we planned to do with them. When we told him, he said ''fine, very eco, not a problem''.

Rather than burning 44 million tyres a year, we'd do better to build self contained earthship houses out of them. And legislate to encourage those houses. Never going to happen, of course; far too many vested interests with utilities companies!
