carrot flower and other experments

Post by junmist »

So last year being so bad that I had hardly got anything out of the veg pots I left a couple of carrots in a pot just to see if they would do anything this year. I am please to say they are flowering so I am hoping for seeds but not holding out to much hope as these are modern carrots.
On another good note my three year old parsnip seeds have given me ten parsnips which are growing well. I am up on last year as the slugs and snails seemed to think I was growing the parsnips just for them but seem to be leaving them alone this year :D The parsnip that I am growing in the middle of the runner bean wigwam has loads of leaf and is also looking good so until I pull it up that experiment looks like it worked.
Growing some beet in an old washing up bowl does not seem to work they are long but have not rounded out so perhaps they need a deeper pot to grow in so I will try that next year.
The 2 hanging pea and sweetpea baskets gave very poor results but I am putting that down to having core compost and not my normal peat. It is something that I would like to try again next year as I like the thought of these baskets.
Once again I have tried to grow potatoes in pots with bad results I just don't seem to have any luck growing them this way. As I had one seed potato over I chucked it in a couple of tyres up at the horses and have ignored it, it seems to be thriving and it will be interesting to see if I get a better result with this one and am waiting for it to be ready.
