A low cost addition to your fire-making kit

Post by Briggs »

A pencil sharpener is a handy little tool for turning twigs and small sticks into dry tinder, even if the stick is wet because you soon get down to the dry inner of the stick within a few turns. An eye-liner pencil sharpener is even better because it has two hole sizes. There's a couple of added benefits too: You won't dull your knife blade making tinder and you end up with some handy sharp sticks.

These pencil shavings ignite well when used on char-cloth but really come into their own if you use cotton wool balls rubbed in vaseline as a fire-starter then just place the shavings on top, then add twigs, sticks etc, etc. Bingo, there's your fire sorted!

Hope that helps a few peeps out.
I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.

Yep, handy little idea. :)
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

It is a good idea.
However I can't stop thinking of half a dozen guys who have taken the idea too far and have dressed up in camo gear just to raid the stationers
