I have a sleeping bag which is reasonably warm, ( I live in the highlands, the nights can get very cold) but too heavy to carry far. I have one that is lighter but despite being the same temp. level, is not at all warm. I need to find one that fits "bug-out" criteria but doesn't cost too much. any suggestions?

This will be difficult, as everyone sleeps different, either hot or cold.

The guides for comfort level vary from munufacturer also, mainly based on a fit young woman IIRC.

I have several bags varying from a woobie up to Army arctic bag. I just take the one that weather conditions dictate.

How heavy is too heavy?

Is wet going to be likely?

Are you of 'normal' size?

Is this going to be BoB only or will it do double duty as a camping bag?

How much can you afford?

think the warm one is 500 or 600gms and -4deg, the lighter is about the same temp. can't remember weight. I'm looking to make a bob and have got a few bits but for the big stuff, i'm tring to keep the weight down to make it easier for myself. As i'm an amateur, i'm looking for any advice from you more seasoned preppers. would expect to have to sleep in a tent at some point and have a small light one I can manage. temps in winter can be minus 10 here - I'm hoping when tshf it's summer!!

I've got (amongst other things) a '58 pattern down bag...... Bloody thing weighs over five pounds and won't pack any smaller then a pillow
On the other end of the scale, Herself has a civvy down bag thats rated comfort @-10 deg. It weighs about 500gr and packs with compression to the size of a grapefruit (got it when it was double discounted and was still stupidly expensive).

Seriously, roughly a pound for your kip-sack in a BoB isn't too bad. Bearing in mind that a litre of water is over two.

I took part a BoB on a budget contest on another site once (Here), most of the entries ended up around the 30lbs mark..... Mind you, they were mainly tarps not tents.

Even a small tent is going to be 1500grs to 2500grs, unless you can tolerate a bivybag (I know I can't)

Think laterally:
If you have two sleeping bags ( No1. summer rated & No.2 autumn rated) then you actually have 3 sleeping bags:

Sleeping bag 1 for Summer
Sleeping bag 2 for Spring/Autumn
Sleeping bag 3 - being sleeping 1 inside sleeping bag 2 for Winter

If you don't have a suitable bag then a fleece blanket or bag liner could increase the insulation - and don't forget a hat, a huge % of heat is 'lost' through the head.

In response to OP assuming your lighter bag is Autumn rated use that plus a fleece blanket if necessary. Or buy a cheap Summer weight bag, http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Camping-/1603 ... eping+bags

.thanks everyone, some good ideas and advice there - except for poppypiesdad. 8yard kilts are tooo expensive these days and i'm scared of haggis, especially in the morning , when they're extra grumpy.

I've just bought an army jungle sleeping bag. I plan to use it as a summer bag with or without bivvy and then add it to my 3 season bag for the winter. I mention this because I got it for £12 on eBay. Worth checking out.
