A different king of foraging

Post by dazthechippy »

Folks, just been thinking and it may help some people - others may have this in hand??

We talk a lot about food warehouses being stripped out, foraging in headgerows, growing your own etc. - has anyone thought about a post SHTF situation of searching abandoned commercial buildings, e.g big offices have staff canteens, and large freezers and shelves of dried/tinned goods..

Perishables are orderd on a just in time basis so stores are minimal and they may have spoiled but it could be a good source of tinned/dried food, even kitchen utensils - maybe they have a warehouse with other stuff in it..

Some of these places have to feed thousands of people daily and a lot or urban preppers live near/access to business parks... I'll boogie in on my cycle as the car would draw attention to me (even if it did work) - cache what I couldnt carry/need in the nicely landscaped grounds and leg if with a bergen of what I can carry/need...

Probably worth keeping on your list - most of the non preppers will go for obvious places like shops, supermarkets, warehouses this is a bit of lateral thinking and OK others may get there first, but i reckon it's a hiding in plain sight scenario. Could also provide shelter if you need it on your travels..

course, you may feel I'm way off the mark here - thoughts welcome...

The subject's been covered before here ;) and in the TV series "Survivors" for that matter, the people who work there or live nearby will be certain to claim it for themselves and most likely be armed to the teeth too should the worst happen, if the army hasn't got there first that is, we need to get real at some point, look at places like Syria even with a terrible bloody civil war going on for years, the numbers of people haven't fallen to the extent some of us keep thinking they will do here practically in the blink of an eye by comparison, only a "The Stand" type scenario could take numbers down so far to make the usual post SHTF scenario pan out.

Not in a dampening your fireworks type of way of course :)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

thanks Plympton, didnt realise it had been covered, never saw Survivors, so will check that out..it's good to be challenged though, have to say I cant see a bunch of corporate office lifers wanting to defend the office -rather be with their family surely? - but a great point about the locals, that'd be true and the authorities I'm sure have everywhere on their watch list for their own unique brand of foraging...

so if it gets desperate it's one lower on the list...

I think the point is it's an extensive supply of stuff they can live off of, all piled up behind secure doors, the workers will be fork lift drivers, truckers, warehousemen, and yes a few pen pushers or mouse clickers  the whole distribution hub thing is evolving these days into the something between that and an actual huge supermarket with no customers or both on one site.. just a load of staff putting together online shopping orders and sending them out in a fleet of vans, depending on what you drive and where you live your £5 delivery charge can be cheaper than doing it yourself
Overall though the point is if there's a useful resource out there, then those who work there or live nearby or built the thing even will know about it, and unlike us, they will have gotten hungry first, if you get desperate it may be worth a look-see, but I'd keep my head down
