Hi I'm by no means an expert but blacksmithing is a hobby and used to be part of a large reenactment group I've made swords to varying degrees of success  steel plate covers a multitude of sins can u be more specific? .... Something to consider is a machete needs to be highly flexible have you had any experience working with metal? What tools do you have access to?

Yes go to shop and buy one , or maybe two , one to use and one as a spare

£20 not really worth the effort to make one

J

but if shtf and you didnt have one all you would need is a flat steel bar and a grinding stone , might take a while of youve not got a grinder or no power to use one . its a hacking instrument , your not going to perform surgery with it
Be Prepared.
Plan like its the last loaf on the shop shelves.
Plan like its the last beer in the fridge.

While I agree with poppypiesdad ... If your about to head into some seriously thick jungle ... Then for ten pounds you save a lot of time and energy by buying the right tool depends how much you value your time? ..... But if the aim is gaining experience in manufacturing/recycling existing hardware into something fit for purpose? .... Then there's a whole new value to that ..... Knowing the properties of metals and how to efficiently transpose scrap into everything from a bucketfull of nails to a saw blade could be an asset in many situations ..... I read a post somewhere here that read along the lines of "if I could travel back in time to the stone age ..,.. I would be confident that I could tell them many things of our technological prowess of the last century but could I teach them anything? ..... Or something like that! The right skills can be far more important than the right tools at times..... Tools break for a start lol
Ummmm sorry I'm letting my self get carried away again .... If you mean mild steel sheet then you will probably be OK its just as little cutting as you can get away with and grinding a blade... Bit if this is hardened plate it could be brittle and therefore unsuitable without retempering .... I would add to my little diatribe above .... That its always satisfying wielding something you made yourself.....unless it breaks of course!!! Lol
