Dried food storage idea....

Post by Yorkshire Andy »

Came across this in Morrisons...

Image

anyhow thinking all the time i got one to try at £1.49 why not :tinfoil .......

this is a 4d maglite to give an idea of size

Image

anyhow this is why i wanted to try it to keep dry perishable longer and keep pests like weevils at bay this bag is now sat in the chest freezer for 5 days to kill any off that have already got in....

Image

been air tight and all the surplus air sucked out the stuff should last a fair while (i hope)

the extraction port has a valve to let air out and not in... you can use a hoover to suck the air out or remove the cap and use your mouth

Actually bought some of these to try and flat pack some of my blankets and winter clothing but never thought of trying it out for food storage purposes. So even in the freezer i assume that the flour wont get affected by moisture etc?

Do we get weevils in this country? Is there a need to freeze things like oats? On packing , the factories have dealt with nasties. I have rice in original packs that is 5 years old. Those packs are in screw top ten gallon drums. No pests.

Yes, I've seen them in popping corn, wheat (bird-food) and oats

See above

True, but only if the packets are intact and aren't the type with venting

Sealed in the factory and then put into a protective container? Not surprised

Putting it simply, when it comes to your preps Belt& Braces can't hurt

We have had them in the kitchen baking cupboard a couple of times..

it only takes one bad bag to bring them in....... and contaminates the rest...

I bag the flour individually then freeze it (freezer bag keeps moisture away)

4-5 days kills the wevils

then remove thaw out to room temperature then vac bag

then freeze again for a couple of days just to be safe....
