buying ready made bug out bags

Post by mikefranks »

Hi all,

Just wanted to know if anyone has bought a ready made bug out bags, there about, £100 for 4 people from the U.S. including delivery

Also wanted to know if anyone has made one and can post some pictures and any guides on if those ready made bags are what you need in the event you needed to bug out

Thanks

I think your 'bug out bag', evacuation bag, grab and go bag, or whatever you want to call it has to be personal to you.
It also depends on why you might need to be leaving in your home, possibly in a hurry.

For some, the bag might contain enough to get through a couple of days in a hotel after leaving your house due to a local fire, chemical leak etc.

For other it may contain the kit needed to survive in the woods.

So what do you need it for?

Also, have a read through the forum. We have had plenty of discussions about this issue, made lists, people have shared their bags and ideas so I really don't think all need to do that again!

Pre-made kits are 'one-size-fits-all'

Preppers and the things they prep for aren't

If 'It' happens and I was given one because I had nothing else then, yes it would be great.
However, you could probably duplicate one of those kits with better quality kit for not much more, or produce a BoB tailored to you, your situation and your skillset.

Here is the BoB/EDC section of this site.

Lots of info on knitting your own

Dont forget import tax and VAT if HMRC snag it....

take it your looking at something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Survival-Earthqua ... B002H5Y9YY

http://www.costco.ca/4-person3-day-Emer ... 06303.html

So to match those kits

3x of these

http://evaq8.co.uk/EMERGENCY-DRINKING-WATER-0.5l.html £5.73 (cheaper at supermarket for bottles)

4x of these

http://evaq8.co.uk/EMERGENCY-FOOD-RATIO ... cuits.html £20.84 (id rather eat my own toe nail clippings)

water tablets

http://evaq8.co.uk/WATER-PURIFICATION-T ... blets.html £2.30 (more than in most kits offering 20 tabs)

water container

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p49101? ... tAodXnYA6A £5.15 2x the capacity of the one in the links above

4 times crappy foil blankets http://evaq8.co.uk/EMERGENCY-FOIL-BLANK ... -Pack.html

84p each £3.36 for 4

4x ponchos £4 ish on Ebay eg

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-X-EMERGENCY ... 3386dfde92

First aid kit £12 ish

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/70-Piece-Delu ... 27c2a4aa08

For £55 your close to the contents of the pre made kits...... ignoring stuff like bar of soap tooth paste intimate hygine and the like which you can get extra of in your weekly shop......

as others have said look at what YOU and your family need and LIKE and pack a bag/ rucksack accordingly

Andy, Su and FC have said it all...it's a personal thing. My only recommendation would be don't skimp on the bag. My get home 24hr pack is a 5.11 MOAB 10 and 72hr pack is the 5.11 Rush 72. They also do a neat covert bag and messenger bag, both are designed to blend in.

A cheap bag will do you no favours when straps and zips break.
I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.

Hi,

I have learnt my lesson on that one, ordered a bag online, turned up and the zips broke, so going to get another one, however, there about £30-£40 for one!

I had forgotten just how much great information there is on the site so thanks for posting that link. :D Over the years we have built up a good base of information. It's all there for new preppers.

No worries Su Its a total minefield even for someone with some outdoors experience with a bit of life thrown into the mix expecially for us Men we love our gadgets after all :ugeek:

People seem to take the whole bug out bag concept too far IMO ... mine i could happily use it at home should the poo hit the fan or at a relief center should we say flood and be put in a sports hall...

Start small gain experience and improve....... way i looked at mine was to think the worst in winter..... No / a damaged house..... and i have one bag... what to put in it to survive... and took it from there..
