I think I have always had a natural tendency to be a prepper, more so when I got a family of my own. I am now 52 and the kids have both grown up but it hasn’t stopped me from worrying about their futures and mine and my wife’s. I look at the state of debt in the country including the government debt and wonder how long it will continue. We continue to put in more housing without increasing the energy and water supply. We are close to not having enough electricity this winter as well. On top of that things like bird flue etc are a real threat.
So is it all just a matter of time? We did what a lot of people have done and watched a few shows on tv and youtube about prepping, then thought, ok so some might be total loons but the idea is not as daft as it might seem. After all before supermarkets and convenience shopping everyone had larger food supplies so it just makes good sense.
Within the last two years we have been nearly cut off by floods, without electricity for the odd day and no water for two days. So anyone who says there is no need to prep in the UK is mad!
We are not planning to bug out, we are staying put. So this is where we are now after 9 months. We have 1000 gallons of water in butts. 10 gallons clean in the house, food for 2 months min. The wife and me both joined an archery club and learned how to shoot, we passed our exam! I have a roll of barbed wire that I can top the 6 foot oak fencing that surrounds the property with quite quickly if I have to. We have put in extensive veg beds and have started reaping the benefits of this already. Our gardens are large and surround the house on three sides so we could extend the veg beds if we want to, we have always been keen gardeners. I am currently putting together get home bags for the cars as I often work a long way from home and the wife is at least 40mins.Our oldest daughter now has a bug out bag for her and her partner and we are their bug out location. We have extensive camping gear and I have stocked up on camping gas for an alternative cooking method, I may get a small rocket stove.
I have looked at weapons for home defence but was not sure if this is the place to discuss them, needless to say they would only be used in a breakdown of law and order when its SHTF time. Our projects for next year are to continue to build the food reserves we want to be about 6 months stored, further look at how to defend the house and to put a hand pump in the garden by drilling down for an extra water supply. I have checked out the water level and it seems doable. I would be happy to post pictures and method when the time comes. So there we are, don’t know where we are in the scheme of things as we have only been at it for a short time so any comments are welcome.

Hello and welcome.
Sounds like you are thinking with your head screwed right, all very impressive. I hope others look at what you have done and stop worrying about building bunkers!!,

Welcome! I love the sound of what you're doing, especially your new project of the hand pump for water - you sound like you've been really practical, thinking about what you'd really need in any problematic situation - water's right up there at the top of the list, thats for sure. I'd love to see pix of the hand pump project when you do it. And I love my little rocket stoves dearly - I have one, tricked out from 3 or 4 cans, insulated with vermiculite, and another made from a single can of tinned potatoes, and I can't tell you how much easier that was to make

looks like you are pretty much there
for me, its more about what would happen if I am snowed in or what will happen if I don't get paid for a while and coping in the meantime and powercuts and the like.
Yes sure we may have a global economic collapse what with the global debt to GDP ratio being about 350% and the like, but one problem at a time
