Either one is a great way to practice target or field target shooting.
Neither is legal to hunt with or use for pest control
I can get you better answers if I know what you're interested in,

Re: Been a while
I've gone down crossbow route with a 175 full size and 2pistols as once cocked anyone could get reasonably accurate results
But I am looking at adding a compound bow as well

Re: Been a while
Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't use it to hunt animals. Just targets and practice. I just think if we get throw back in to the dark ages everyone is going to want guns, but guns need ammo and make a lot of noise, a bow or crossbow are very quiet and push come to shove you can always make your own bolts or arrows. So basically I'm a beginner and looking to which would be best. I have fired a lot of different weapons (guns) so I'm kinda leaning towards crossbow but then I think for speed of fire and reload rate a bow would be quicker.

Re: Been a while
Right then:
Bows are quicker but crossbows hit harder
Bows are easier to improvise, crossbows are easier to 'skill-shift*' to
Bows don't appeal to thugs, crossbows make better hunting weapons
While bows are bulkier then longarms, they're less bulky then a crossbow
A crossbow can be used kneeling, prone or resting on something, a bow needs more space to use
Its all horses for courses, a bit like the big debate I keep seeing on US based forums (which is 'best' pistol, shotgun or rifle?...Correct answer is "For?")
Do you know why there was a law forcing men to practice archery* ? Because the bow uses muscles and skills that nothing else does.
You can win a gun-fight two ways, throw more lead then the other guy or put your first shot exactly where you want it.

That's it I'm have always been a one shot one kill ( or bulleyes ). But like you said you can't rest with it so I guess a bow wouldn't be a good weapon to try and hid with haha. I do remember hearing that about all men had to do archery.

I have long wanted to get myself a bow, what in your opinion is best ?
Are the compound style Bows as powerful as an old longbow ?
If I wanted a bow for hunting ( I know I cant use it in the Uk for that ) or general use what would be the best to get from the outset, these things are rarely cheap so I would like to get something that will take me from a beginers point of view to a good level.
I might also consider competition use if there are bows that are suitable for all round use.
