Torches

Post by riversong »

I've lost my favourite torch and can't remember what it was.

So I'm looking for a good torch for my pocket. Needs bevelled edge (i.e. 'tactical) for sharpening. It needs to be AA or AAA - none of this 15680 malarkey. Budget£25 max

Any ideas please boys and girls?

My main torch is a Led Lenser Police Tech, but that is probably a bit big and just over your budget, but I recently bought 3 of these:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007 ... sc=1&s=diy

They are great value and very bright with a nice and simple speed focus lens taking it from spot to flood. When on spot it produces a very focused narrow beam of white light which unusually projects a square shaped pattern reflecting the shape of the cree chip!

They run on a single AA battery.

The pen clip thing can be easily removed if its not wanted.

With regards to the 'tactical' aspect, it has 3 projecting bevels from the main body, though these are no sharp (but could be sharpened if needed) and sit just proud of the rounded lens.

Overall a very good torch at a throwaway price, but mine did take about 4 weeks to arrive, though this included the Christmas/new year period.

Ledco Lensor are quality but can be pricey.

I got a couple of these for £13 a while ago from amazon, but they've gone up a fair bit since -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002 ... UTF8&psc=1

An impressive 42 hours of burn with one set of batteries and its supplied with two sets of Duracell. The light from it is fantastic too, which is always a plus with a torch :D .

Hey Devonian, what's the battery life like on one of those? I have a few cheap 9 led / triple AAA torches around the place. They have excellent battery life, and enough brightness for walking around in the dark (no street lights in my village!), but can't project light much further than my own feet!

I recently bought 1 of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flashlight-3x18 ... C000+hours

Now i know these take the 18650 batteries but ARE provided with charger. Now all i can say is for £27 a torch with 3800 lumens and a range of 400-500m it is very good value.

+ If the torch doesn't blind any would be attackers you could certainly hit them with this thing.

N.B - Mine came in 4 days and the charger is sort of flimsy but it works giving batteries a 3+ hour life..

LED Lenser is great. Had mine since 2007 and it's a tough, durable torch.

Thanks for that. I deliberately asked for AA batteries and not 18650. Post Tits-Up, there will be no electricity to recharge. Good policy to standardise on batteries and not have too many varieties. I've gone for AA and AAA. Thanks though

I have some cr123 battery torches... Now whilst not massively popular most shops stock in a shtf situation aa AAA batteries will fly off the shelf but the cr123 will still be there

Dont get too hung up on standardisation as you back yourself into a corner.....

i have a spread of torches and lanterns.....

i have in no paticular order

AAA maglites led lenser and head torches and a led lantern

AA Maglites a head torch and a led lantern

C cell a couple of torches (again another increasingly unpopular size)

D cell Maglites 6v lantern battery adaptors

6v lantern hand torch and a basic camping lantern.

a couple of 18500 and cr123 torches and mains charger the 18500 also has a low voltage charging jack its on my to do list to get a car charger for it

Why? if i cant get any AA batteries i have a fighting chance to get something and have the torch to use it in.... same goes for radios

as the ultimate fall back i have the wind up lanterns torches and radio...

Since you want a AA torch look at the standard mini maglite whilst not the brightest anymore they are reliable....

and if you look over on some USA based sites you can get sharpened tail caps (for escaping from a damaged vehicle) to castellated crowns

Another vote here for the LED Lenser, I carry a P7 daily and it is perfect for what I need. Just about on budget at about 28 quid.
