Spares

Post by cpslashm »

My solid-fuel range does hot water to a thermal store, which uses a pump, which needs electricity.

Long power cut, boiler boils, so I'm planning on a back-up supply.

Which got me thinking. SHTF. What if the pump breaks? Those thermostat thingies never last long. Some slates on the roof break. Engine oil? Spark plugs? Tap washers?

We often list food items but what about other spares? Which are most important to stockpile to keep things running?

I agree with your basic premiss - and would add that the law of sod dictates that something will break only when it's at the most inconvenient time!

Obviously you could fill you house with spares of everything........ but where do you stop!

Assuming you have the spare cash I'd say when the next thing breaks & you have to buy a replacement buy two of them, one as a replacement one as a spare. (So your boiler thermostat blows, buy two keep the 'spare' and use on a FIFO (first in first out) basis in case of future breakdowns.

I tend to buy when I see something cheap. EG Engine oil - occasionally on special offer at supermarket (ASDA) I bought a couple of gallons, which in normal use would last a year or so. I actually have spares for most things that might go wrong with the house/car, either as spares or at least alternatives. (in terms of tap washers/light bulbs/electrical-& car- bits & bobs. But I know that should something happen the thing that breaks will be the one thing I don;t have a spare of.i

Epoxy resin, gaffer tape, silicone sealant, needles, those little drill bits which always break....

Perhaps the ability to customize spares will be the way of the future.
