Hi preppers
I was wondering who else if you plan to take a fishing kit in your 72hr bob or your long term bug out kit? If so what do you plan on fishing? Fresh or salt water?
Fishing rods/ kits
Re: Fishing rods/ kits
The answer for me is no although I do have fishing gear. Question for you how long would it take you sitting on the side of river to get hmmm say 4 descent size fish in normal condition. I'll ask the same with the people who do sea fishing. If you say it would take you 15 minutes then by all means go fish if it take longer then that time could be spent getting wood for the fire maybe foraging and such. By all mean fish but get a purse net( wonder were I can buy one of these) or make fish traps leave them in the water go gather food, wood or water go back and hopefully you have fish as well as the water, wood with some nice wild herbs to cook with item all in the same time as it took you to catch the fish.

you can buy a cheap fold up net on Ebay, bait it and leave it, come back later, you wont have time to sit on a bank with a rod and line for hours.
Adapt or Die, there is no middle ground.

A Gill net and/ or longlining would be the energy efficient way. We used to longline for eels as kids, and sold 'em in the yard of the pub.
However, do bear in mind that both of the above are illegal. The Environment Agency will crucify you if caught.
Angling is a good skill. A good sport. Rod and line fishing is worth learning now, and then you learn the habits of fish and their habitat. To be fair, when you know what you are doing , rod and line fishing can be VERY productive. I catch ALL my deadbaits during the Summer for my Piking during Winter. This is a small chest freezer full. Of course, I could eat those fish.
There is an image of Anglers, "sitting all day by the river".Not true when you are experienced. Summer is upon us, get some gear, and get out there. You won't regret it.

Re: Fishing rods/ kits
Fishing isn't something I have looked that much into, apart from crayfish. And in that case it was more about finding out about it in case. After all these days, you still need to have permission to cash crayfish from the landowner and also to get a license, the first of which can be classified as hassle or difficult to organise.
With all activities that involve foraging, hunting and catching your own live meats requires an energy expense that might not always be reimbursed by the catch itself. Gardening on the other hand seems to be something that requires some perpetual involvement in, but can still provide you with the calories as payback for the effort.

Re: Fishing rods/ kits
This subject interests me greatly as I am a mad keen angler.
Now most people who don't fish visualize anglers sitting in the rain next to a canal or river catching very little, this is often true inland but its a different story when it comes to sea fishing. History tells us that many civilizations thrived and still thrive today whilst heavily dependent on fishing for a large part of their diet. This includes the UK even today.
See below the nutritional info for a few fish species easily obtainable in the UK by anyone with a desire to catch them.
All these fish can be caught from the shore but a boat will give you a significant advantage and save tackle losses if fishing rocky areas. If a boat is out of your personal reach think open canoe, kayak, rowing dingy, or raft. You need only be a couple hundred yards offshore to find good fishing in this country. Also while you are at the coast Seaweed is a great nutritional resource as is the abundant amount of molluscs and shellfish on offer.
Now I know there are illegal methods mentioned and the taking of freshwater fish other than Trout is illegal in the UK but I am thinking of times when the law comes second in line to putting food in my families bellies.
Mullet per kg 1500cal 248g protein. Easily netted/speared in harbors, estuaries and beaches with a deep rotting weed line. Can be targeted with rod and line but they are difficult to catch consistently.
Whiting per kg 1150cal 234g protein
Cod per kg 1050cal 228g protein. Both found throughout the UK with seasonal variations. Easy to target and often caught on rod and line simultaneously. Mostly caught using bait from shore but more often targeted using feathers and lures/pirks from a boat.
Pollock per kg 1180cal 249g protein. A prolific fish found on reefs, rocky shoreline and headlands. An easy fish to catch using feathers and lures from shore or boat. Available year round dependent on location.
Mackerel per kg 2619 238g protein. The most abundant species from Spring to Autumn. Easy to target on feathers or lures. A 10 kilo haul from a days fishing is a lot of calories for very little input.
Bass per kg 1240cal 236g protein. Found mostly from the southern half of the UK. Estuaries, Open beaches, Rock and reef marks. Many ways to target them from netting, spear fishing bait and lures.
Fresh water fish would be fair game in a SHTF situation and they would be ideal fodder when sea fish are out of season in your location or if your are to far from the sea for a day trip.
Pike per kg 1130cal 246g protein
Carp per kg 1620cal 228g protein
Rainbow trout per kg 1190cal 204g protein
Perch per kg 1170cal 248g protein
So you may guess that fishing is/will be a big part of any scenario good or bad for me and my family.

Re: Fishing rods/ kits
I have a few of these but I've never used them in the rivers near me so I can't say if they are effective or not. (No licence = Poaching).unsure wrote:an american idea , yoyo fishing . set it , leave it and go back later. much smaller than a rod and line and easier to carry than a net .

I recently experienced Plymouth City centre so that's why I prep.
