There are no limits on diesel storage like there are on petrol (you are limited to 30 litres of petrol at home.)

I keep 2 x 200 litre drums and 4 x 25 litre drums.

I also run a van with a 100 litre tank and a car with a 70 litre tank which are both kept filled.

So I reckon at any one time i'll have around 600 litres.

Fuel companies say Diesel can be stored up to a year without any issue but recommend if its kept any longer that it is filtered before use.

Unless water can get into it there's usually no problem.

I've been storing diesel for 25 years without any incidents.

BUT be safe about it, no barbecues on top of the drums etc :)

Cheers Spindrift

Your right. Its a make or break scenario.
When I was talking to a friend about it, I mentioned my bugout route
He noticed that it would take me near a city that would undoubtedly flood
The converation then came to my city
Luckily I live at the highest place in town which therefor has its +s and -s
We would be safe from flooding but it would drive everyone upwards forming an island of needy and desperate people
If we started to flood here I would need to bale out immediately but I doubt the missus would want to leave with a "give it a few days" mentality

As for the gear.........I'll keep you posted on that one

Cheers for your time

worth mentioning as well , you can extend fuel life if you add some thing like stabil fuel stabiliser . if you up the dose you can store fuel for around 2 years .

Insurance
Do you expect your house to burn down No you don't but you have insurance for it.
Do you expect to have a car accident No but you have insurance
Do you have break down insurance how many times a year are you going to use it.
Preps are insurance you don't expect to need them but they are there in case

When I first started prepping my good lady thought I was going loony. She was telling me off for being paranoid and spending money on stuff I'm never going to need. I was one step ahead of her though because I knew her well enough to know that this was going to be her reaction. The first few things I bought were all things that I could use in a SHTF situation as well as in everyday situations. For example, I bought a Bacho Laplander folding saw, she looked at me funny for it and then a couple of weeks later was impressed with how well it worked when I was clearing out some small trees in the garden with it. I've kept doing this, buying things that I can use everyday and I buy the ones that I know I will use soon and that she will see me using.

As for food, when I first suggested she buys in bulk I was called paranoid and she dismissed the thought. The fuel strikes came, the supermarkets didn't have her usual favourite things in stock and she realised it wasn't such a bad idea. We buy sugar, boxed milk and other such things more in bulk now than ever before. She's come around and she's even starting so say "we might a well buy this in bulk, we'll use it all eventually anyway". I think a big tipping point was when I explained that buying things that you use in bulk means you pay the current price. If the price goes up, you've still got your stocks you're eating from and you're eating at a lower price than what it's now getting sold at. She understands that doing it this way SAVES money rather than it being a waste of money.

I think the best advice is to be patient with your other half. They will eventually realise that what you do is sensible, even if that day is the day that the SHTF and your preps gets them through it.

Hi there Juvecu

Cheers for the reply

I am kinda getting the hang of things now in the manner that you suggested
We moved into a nice flat though it has a crap electric cooker. It has given me a great excuse to by a portable gas stove.
Not sure which one to get though.......one with small reusable cartridges; useful I guess in a mad bug out
or one with one of those blue Calor gas bottles; kinda bulky
What would you go for?

I now need an excuse to start hording canned food. Difficult one that is. We never eat from cans. I need a months supply.
Any ideas on how to get around that one?????

Cheers
