Nutrition

Post by theoldcowguru »

I'm not sure if this has been brought up often before but it is hard to type using my PDA as it keeps making typos which I have to constantly correct. I'm also new to the forum.

Just a quick note, on the posts I have seen many preppers are tying to get the best bargain (which is good) but wouldn't they have less nutritional value than the more expensive brands, therefore you'll need to use more to compensate or need supplements. I'm not very knowledgeable in this but I thought it is a topic which needs to be addressed in case any one has forgotten.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention the possible stuff there is in those cheap brands... processed meats and the dreads, fillers, substitutes, sweeteners like sugar etc. to make you more addicted. That's one of the reasons why ready meals are so popular. Not good for you at all

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that is the reason why they're so cheap. Get cheap brands, but it is ill-advised to get the cheapest.

I know what you are talking about there, and thats why lentils are so cool because they can be sprouted and when they are sprouted they provide a combination of macronutrients and micronutrients. Its the micros that are so hard to come by and sprouts can really help.

You can get your macros from tinned potatoes, cooked lentils, stored coconut oil etc and rice, but you also need the other fun stuff that one can only get from veggies. Either way you slice it, yo will stillprobably be short of vitamin D and B12 (check your CURRENT diet on

https://cronometer.com/

to see how nutritionally deficient you are when times are good, and then logically extrapolate to when times are bad and think about which key nutrients you will be lacking in and then stock up on enough supplements to keep yourself going!)

I am currently on B12. Its not a nutrient that you can necessarily feel working IMHO, but it sure is important in the long run for mental clarity. I'm also on the vitamin D for immune system at the moment on top of other nutritional additions that have been recommended to me.

A good point! I can't stand the taste of many of the cheaper tinned goods and many give me serious stomach problems

I don't necessarily go for the expensive brands unless the are on offer but more the mid range stuff, except for where meat is concerned, I will only go for good stuff here, can't stand gritty meat (wtf are those bits??) So am going to get a few m&s tinned meats before I stock anything like that. I wish I could can my own as that would make me much happier and would do lots of meals that I know we would all eat happily.

Ground up bones probably
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.
