I'm loving this writeup of yours! Nothing better than pure uncompressed thoughts, the icing ain't half as important as the cake in my mind! :)

Ok ... Last time I stressed the need for everyone to have a Rucksack. I cannot stress this enough... You have to have one that contains ALL of the things you need. One item you absolutely have to ensure you have is plenty of is socks. Lots and Lots of socks. Don't skimp or complain. They must be 100% wool socks. Trust me you will be thanking me on this one. Carry 4-6 extra pairs in your bag.

OK.... so where do we go next?

Lets talk about a subject close to my heart.

You are not going to be fighting WWIII. Forget it and start thinking about staying alive. Your most powerful weapon is avoidance. So stop looking to arm yourself to the hilt. What you need to be able to do is to exercise hunter and gathering skills. You need stuff to fish and take small game. Fisshing can be done with a simple setup of some line and hooks. Learn what you can glean from the sea. You on an Island so the sea is there. If your inland. Think about what is compact and can assist you in catching fish in your area.

You need to have the ability to take small game. There is a wonderful thing called a catapult. It has been used for centuries to take small game. Get one and a huge amount of bearings or my favorite. Small glass marbles. Here is something important. Practice using your catapult. Now lets think about this for a moment. With anything you have to practice.... Right? So what is going to be safest to do in your back garden? A bow, Air Rifle, Air Pistol or Crossbow? Your lucky if your neighbor does not call the police on you with those. Yet the humble catapult can be just as effective. Really cheap. Even better you can practice without getting in trouble.

I know this one was short, yet I get writers block like most.

Feel free to ask me to cover different subjects thought.

Cheers all.

Serious question - what do you do if you can't wear wool? I'm itching at the thought of wool socks. Secondly, burst out laughing at the mention of marbles. I've been collecting them for this purpose, but currently using them as garden planter mulch (covering the soil for appearance and to keep down weeds) because they are genuinely lovely things and totally reusable, unlike most other types of mulch. A prep in plain sight with a dual purpose. All I need is the catapult :). Must look into that!

Stock up on Mint Imperials, if you can't get any prey you can eat the ammo, and if you do dispatch your hunted item, it'll have minty undertones
Two is one and one is none, but three is even better.

An advantage of marbles and even more so mint imperials, is that they will deform if they hit something hard, mint imperials also are bio degradable, we used to go catapulting near a river, piling small stones atop one another for a target with the river as a backdrop, if the local pebbles are no use then mint imperials are a cheap alternative to ball bearings pr marbles for that matter, all you have to worry about is diabetic fish ;)
I have a strategy, it's not written in stone, nor can it be, this scenario has too many variables, everything about it depends on those variables, being specific is not possible.

I'll try and field that one.
I used to have the same problem (well, wool jumpers in my case) and then I found out that not all wool is created equal.

Regular wool is not the same as 'New Wool' (which has been treated somehow to stop it felting)
Lamb's wool is finer (and therefore less itchy) and Merino wool is even more itchless again.

Unfortunatly, the lower the Itch-factor the more expensive the product tends to be :(

Norwegian wool is far less itchy than Shetland, and also wearing something like bamboo yarn underneath the woolly thing makes it much better. But not cotton because it soaks up and holds sweat.

Search for 'coolmax' socks, cotton based but the design wicks moisture away and they dry far far faster than wool. I like wool and still use it but have drifted more towards synthetic clothing over the last several years.

Real food question there. I used to have the same problem early in my army career. So I wore real thin dress socks under the wool socks. It is true not all wool socks are alike. Yet I found that the older the sock was, the less it irritated me. Try an experiment and was that pair of socks quite a few times and use a fabric softener with each wash. If that does not do the trick then there is still hope. Get on eBay and find some long polypropylene socks. They are self wicking and make a great companion to the wool socks. When they first came on the market, we all grabbed a bunch. They have an added benefit of reducing the occurrence of blisters do too the wicking and that their slick like surface. So they stay well fitted to the foot and any rubbing happens between the poly sick and the wool sock. It gives you the best of both worlds. If this combination worked for us on 35 mile full kit force marches. It will do you well.

The poly sock keeps your feet drier and the wool does what it is best at.

Thank you for the question. This is a perfect example of things that don't readily come to mind when I am writing up a post.

Keep the questions coming.

Thanks all.
