another expensive (but not so much compared to cost of a small holding with a house) option that I would love to be able to afford as either BOV or my actual floating home would be a 65M offshore rated wide beam dutch barge from piper boats. Given that you / your place of work are near the coast already and you can secure an affordable residential mooring & car parking space being able to mooch around the wide bits of the canal system and rivers plus being able with the right skill set to cross channel or hang out off shore. Plenty of space on the roof for solar / wind and maybe some hydroponic veggies and chickens.
It just needs an awful lot of £s putting out of most peoples reach, may more affordable if it becomes your permanent home...
