Update. The tooth remained 'mobile' and I had low level toothache all December. Saw the dentist twice inbetween. Told me to let it settle. Anyhow, for two weeks I have had raging pain, which settled Sunday.
Saw the dentist today, and it appears I have had a gum abcess because of the tooth mobility. Penicillin now and two weeks today when the infection is clear the tooth is being extracted. Dentist's orders.
I hear you ask " Why not sort it sooner?". Well, as a Butcher, December means 12+ hrs a day. Thankfully I am back to my part time hours now. And I knew I had this appointment coming up.

I for one, would not like the idea of a societal breakdown, Doctors and Dentists are a Godsend when you need them.

Had an infected tooth (developed an abscess) years back when I couldn't get to a dentist.

Rinsing my mouth out with salt water then packing around the painful area with dampened teabags took me in under an hour from completely unable to sleep/think/stay still/believe it was possible to ever stop hurting to feeling absolutely fine & requiring no pain killers at all.

I didn't believe for an instant it would work but I'd have tried anything by that point - codeine hadn't made a dent in the level of pain I was in so who'd think a teabag would help?

Of course I had to put up with dribbling slimy tea spit for the whole time (so if it's something you ever need to do get something to act as a bib & a cup to spit in) but it drew out the infection & the swelling completely disappeared (replaced the teabags with fresh ones after about 20 minutes)

By the time I could get to a dentist he couldn't find any trace of infection & it never came back.
In an ideal world, if you had to do that you'd still need to visit the dentist as you can get blood poisoning if left untreated, but in a worst case scenario or just a how do I make it from 3am til the morning? one, teabags could really help.

Nobody I know nowadays even drinks tea, but I still keep a bag of teabags in the house just in case.

I had an abscess under my 3rd molar once, which was incredibly inconvenient as I was nowhere near a dentist and wouldn't be for some time, it hurt like hell and was stopping me sleeping.
Not that I want to horrify anyone, but I got myself drunk and drained it with an empty syringe. My god did it hurt.

By the time I got to someone that knew what they were doing the tooth had already fallen out. This is why I now have a gap that scares my children into brushing their teeth like hygiene demons :D

Toothache is the worst pain in the World!

You can double up on paracetamol and Ibuprofen to keep the pain at bay, but not at the same time. For example 2 paracetamol at 8am next dose would be 12pm but you can take Ibuprofen at 10am then again at 2pm. This keeps the pain relief overlappped and at a constant level. Just make sure not to exceed the dose on the box for both medications.

You can also buy a gel which gives topical pain relief for a limited time called Orajel.

If you have an abcess which is full of pus etc you can always drain it off with a needle and syringe for temporary relief.

If you've lost a filling and don't have a custom dental kit you can always use candle wax to plug the hole until something better comes along (please don't hold a lighted candle in your mouth though!) Kneed the wax in your hand until it's pliable them pack it into the gap.

Or you could always use clove oil.......

Vital point with paracetamol.

For an ADULT never exceed a total of 4 grammes per 24 hours. There is guidance on max doses for kids.

Watch out for things that contain paracetamol in their ingredients but don't say so on the label ( cold remedies are a big problem.)

Overdose on paracetamol and you die a very unpleasant death from liver failure. the lethal dose varies but is not that high.

some good tips here for the toothache and dental problems, I will keep the tea bag and Clove oil in mind, as like you say, nothing normally works when just taking paracetomal. :)
