I've been brewing a few kits this month and I've had trouble activating the yeast - could it be down to this sugar? I have a policy that I buy only the cheapest possible sugar. And everything else to be honest. I got this sugar from Lidl, but it's 49p a bag at Farmfoods and a few other places too.

i doubt the type of sugar would effect yeast , could be old yeast or the temp. brewing isn't my thing , but i do make bread ,
sometimes i use honey in the place of sugar , yeast isn't really fussy , the sugar is just a food source for yeast

i prefer cane sugar over all and try to avoid beet sugar , Costco sell big bags of Tate and Lyle at decent price

Thanks for all the sourcing tips, of course I walked into the Co op the other day and remembered being gently remonstrated with a few years ago as I practically cleared their T&L sugar supply

In my defence we had a LOT of fruit that needed sorting out....

Thank you

Farmfoods is proper Tate and Lyle - 49p per KG. Grabbed a few bags for my current beer kit brewing season.

49p? Wow!

There is a farmfoods store I know of and I've not plucked up the initiative to make it there yet. I must admit the prices they've advertised for meat/milk makes me wonder how sustainable the business is of their suppliers, but perhaps now it's time I found my way down there. Thanks for the heads up :D

Farmfoods is the best shop ever. I think of it as a man shop full of man food, because there is tons of meat and quick cook food that you either bung in the oven or th'microwave.

There is nothing cheaper overall, although I'm sure there are odd things in there that don't work out as cheap as Aldi or whatever. But don't forget to print off your voucher! 10% discount vouchers are in their flyers or you can print them off from the website. I always keep a few £2.50 off when you spend £25 vouchers in me wallet.
