Storing a butane cylinder?

Storage is pretty good, I think the canister would rust out first. As aleady mentioned, if long term storage is more realistic, get a gas detector for it, and store it close to fresh air. Ideally, in a shed next to the door - A you can easily check the detector inside of having to 'find' the bottle amongst stores and B if there is a leak, you should smell it first before switching on a light, preventatively, next to the door helps the gas dissipate instead of building up

I'm kitting out the garage with heavy duty shelving and lots of really useful boxes. I doubt they're air tight or even wee bug tight (I will probably cling film around the rim of the boxes I know I won't need access to except if the SHTF). The boxes are black and there to keep everything neat, the contents invisible to visitors, out of the light and easy to keep clean. I've got one box with cooking preps: one gas stove so far, 3 disposable BBQs and I just have room to put the only four butane gas canisters I have upright, but slightly tilted - they're brand new and still shrink-wrapped. Would this be OK? Was hoping to fill a couple of boxes with gas. They keep talking about ventilation, but I thought this was only for when you were using them. Want to get it right. I have two portable gas fires and will get them into an 84l (or 60odd litre) RUB and, again, may have room to stuff in a few gas cannisters. No propane yet. Still a bit scared to go there.

Just found I can get the cannisters upright (and get the lid closed) and have room for 4 more (buying tonight, I think ).

Drill son holes in a lower part of the box to let any leaking gas escape (its heavier than air);

I stored a dozen or so of these small 'aerosol' gas canisters in my camping trailer (which is water tight) however, a couple of them started to go rusty, presumably due to condensation. I now have them in a sealed plastic bucket (still in the trailer) and this seems to have cured the problem.

Ones in have in "store" are smothered in 3in1 spray oil (not wd40) bit of hot soapy water soon brings it off when I rotate stocks over camping season
