uum lots to consider.. those flames are a bit scary on that wood burning thing. The Kelly Kettle I saw a demo of looked different the flame was covered and you dropped twigs in the top.

I do like the little camping gaz Bistro 300 too, but storing the gas canister worried me though they looked easy to put in and turn on from the video, without needing matches or anything.

I looked at the Hexi whatsits... just googling photo's of them I noticed there was a warning that they needed to be used in a well ventilated place...so I'm not sure about them they just look like BBQ Bricks.

That water thing I didn't relaise it was only single use with specific sachets of food. ..Again there was a warning about chemicals on the link given.

Just a comment on shelf life, I use a gas powered nail gun at work, I was given some expired gas cylinders for it so tried them - they are 2 years passed their use by date and they are no good, they still have pressure but don't fire the gun. I can't think why unless there is more in them than just gas.

Im sorry if i had time i would have explained the storage thing better... In the UK its Illegal to store Propane indoors in the industrial cylinders.....

or residential properties, you can use up to 15kg of Butane (2 blue 7.5kg gas bottles) indoors, for example in portable gas heaters. You can also store a further maximum of 15kg indoors.

Our red Propane gas bottles can be used indoors in commercial and industrial premises on a temporary basis, for example when you’re using a blowtorch or air heater but the gas bottles must be stored outdoors.

In the case of fixed installations, Propane gas bottles must be sited outside, whilst Calor stockists and commercial and industrial premises should store LPG in accordance with the UKLPG Code of Practice No. 7 "Storage of Full and Empty LPG Cylinders and Cartridges".

you will notice in any camping shop they are locked in a cage outside where as the smaller cartridges are legal (and safe to store inside) not seen any news reports of a camping shop going bang ;)

as such a few gas cartridges really shouldnt pose a big risk (remember most aerosol cans ranging from fly spray to deodorant contain Butane as a propellent )

another option is a classic boy scouts Trangia

with a liquid fuel

http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/fuel4-bio-e ... ml-p284700

or methylated spirit s (availible in all diy stores but more expensive than the bio fuel above but it gives a good fall back if desperate )

the propper fuel storage bottle makes for a spill free storage and dispensing

as you can see the stuff is D of E approved so teenagers are entrusted with them when on expeditions with a little training ;)

Just a quick question on the camping stove gas canister - I used my camping stove for the first time ever about a month ago to prepare one meal, so there should be a lot of gas left in the canister.

Do you leave the canister connected to the camping stove (the instructions didn't say), or do you remove it?

Also, I have it stored in the cupboard under the stairs - is that safe enough?

Thanks.
